The Golf Ball Trick Take 2

Thanks for the input on the torture devices below. I knew I could count on my bloggity peeps to help me out. A golf ball kept showing up in the comments as a way to work out the foot muscle.

Sarge told me about the golf ball a long time ago when I first started suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. She swore up and down that this ball made her PF go away. I took her advice and used it for awhile but stopped because I felt it was doing more damage.

Since I am desperate to get this taken care of, I decided to give my golf ball one more chance. I pulled it out of my desk drawer and rolled my foot on it all.day.long. When I wasn't rolling, I was picking it up with my toes (also a suggestion from Sarge). The pain was killing me, but I kept up with it.

She came over to my desk when I was whimpering in pain only to discover that I was using the golf ball improperly (GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER...SICKOS!). I was putting full pressure on my foot where it was sore and nailing the ball on that point. I using the ball as a form of a deep tissue massage. She immediately corrected me and told me to use gentle pressure and lightly roll the ball under my foot then stretch. What difference that technique was! By then, the damage was already done. My foot was swollen and sore from the constant rolling I was doing. *duh*.

Today I am going to use the frozen water bottle, do some calf stretches, and take some ibuprofen. I also saw at Tar-jay that they have a brace that is similar to those ever sexy socks but much cheaper. I am going to give it a shot.

Now that the cold weather is here my motivation to get outside is dwindling. I decided to get the Chubby Hubby on board with running. He asked me to help him with a workout program and I need the extra motivation. Together we are doing the Couch to 5K program. This is a 9 week program which is perfect because it takes us right to the end of the year.

Hmm, using the golf ball on your "foot" (yeah right). You are a wild one. :)

Hope it feels better soon. Kudos to you and Hubs on your spousal running commitment. The C25k walk/run plan is great way to get started.

"and now for my famous ping pong ball trick" the water bottle worked the best for me... if all fails, I have a boot you can wear...

I think having your husband on board will help. It is always nice having someone there to help keep you motivated and to push you when you would rather no do anything.

I must've missed that blog. I also heard about using tennis balls against a wall to work out back knots. I need to go to the store.

Good thing for getting him on board with the running. I'm getting back on the road myself

I missed the first post but I wanted to tell you that I own the blue rocker looking thing. I bought it on recommendation of a physical therapist. It has been worth every penny I paid for it. Not only does it help with PF but it also give a great calf stretch for both the upper and lower area near the achilles. Buy it, it's so worth it. I've also done the water bottle. Hope all the other things you're trying are starting to help. I figure it's great that your hubby will run with you - if your foot can't take it he can carry you home :-)

This is timely for me because I'm currently suffering with my own bout of what I believe to be PF. I think I'll try the golf ball trick. Thanks!

I hope the pain eases up SOON!

I've also heard of hot-cold therapy (there's a word for it but I can't think of it right now). You basically shock your foot back and forth bewteen cold and hot. Yeah, doesn't sound too appealing, but anything that works, right?!

Hi Carly! I absolutely loooove your blog name. Although, you don't look very chubby in your picture...

My husband suffers from PF, too. I think I'll tell him about the golf ball trick, though... And also relay the lessons learened from today. hehe. I got my Chubby Hubby started running 2 years ago back when he was just my chubby BF and he's lost 20 something lbs since. And I don't have to run alone!

(And thanks for visiting!)

LMAO...glad that she helped you with your golf ball problems. I hope that after the swelling subsides that you get some relief from the pain.

YEAH!! So happy that your and your Chubby Hubby are going to C25K together. What a great motivator!!

Great job for getting the hubby on board. My Hubs has been hinting lately that he needs to work out more because he's "chubster" (whatever- he's 145 lbs!).

The whole golf ball thing reminds me of my brother's bachelor party (no, I wasn't there). The Hubs and some friends took him golfing in Wendover, NV (it's the white trash Vegas), and they used a Sharpie to write stuff on all the balls (boys are weird). One of the balls was "Levi's virginity" (that's my brother), and they kept joking whenever someone would hit the ball, "Don't lose Levi's Virginity!" The Hubs came home with a ball that said "Midget Porn"- I don't think I want to know what the other balls said.

But anyway, I hope that something will work for your pain. = )
