Do I Hear Angels Singing?????

My Garmin functioned properly *gasp*!
It uploaded to Gamin Connect without a problem.

I of course blame the gadget for the problems I was having. It certainly would not be me not being patient enough to work the stupid thing.

For those of you wondering about Garmin Connect it is a website that houses all of your workout information. It creates reports and "stuff" and you can share it with their online community (I haven't really looked through it very well). My watch came with the do-hickey shown here, it is a wireless thingy that pops into your USB port and it receives the data off of the Garmin. Sorry, I truly am a technotard and do not know the names of these things. This then loads the information into either Training Center or Garmin Connect (now I have both).

I am giddy because it worked properly. I hope to repeat the results tomorrow.

Here are the digits from today's C25K workout.
Total Time: 00:32:59
Distance: 2.54 mi
Calories: 353

This is only the 2nd one this week. Our Thursday run was interrupted by a Big 10 sub sandwich and a snowstorm (we got about 9"). I will be repeating the 3 and 5 minute intervals tomorrow.

On top of the run/walk I had a date with Jillian today. Finally, after much procrastination I can finally check off the workouts for today and get in the shower.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Storm of the Season

Here it comes....more snow. The weather peeps are saying this could be the biggest one of the season. They are predicting anywhere between 1-12" of snow. That is quite the range. I really wish I could have a job as a weather forecaster to have a margin of error that big. Anyone want to guess how much we are really gonna get? My guess is just enough to make my 5 mile commute a 2 hour drive.

I have no worries if we really do get snowed in, I have all the emergency necessities...lots of wine, chips, and the internet.

I *know* we are getting something because I have a headache and my wrists are achy. I feel like an old lady. Does anyone else have super powers like mine where you can predict the weather by your aches and pains?

My morning got off to a rough start. I oversleptwas lazy and didn't want to get up which resulted in me being late for work. When I finally was in transit, I went to park in the ramp attached to our building and they would not let me in because they were accepting reservations only (WTF? Don't they know who I am???!!!). I had to go to a parking lot much farther away and walk it in. I then saw a glimmer of hope....a shuttle bus! I hopped on and took it into campus. The bus driver whizzed past my stop and took me about a half mile out of my way. Hmmmmmfp (not what I really said). I sucked it up and huffed it in looking like a sherpa with all of my bags. THEN I realized that I forgot my work ID which also contains my log in information. Lord help me. I should have stayed in bed today. I just hope the storm of the century holds off so I can do my lunch time run.

I will update later with my run info. I am sure it will be something like this.
WK4, Day 2 C25K. 30 minutes (give or take). I am also sure I will bitch mention something about the 5 minutes being hard. We will see.....maybe I will have a fun story to share.

Free to a Good Home

One 18 month old Diva with a killer scream and a big attitude.

I am of course kidding. HOWEVER, I do believe we have been blackballed by another babysitter. Chubby Hubby and I wanted to get out for a quick dinner. A girl I work with at my retail gig said she was interested in babysitting. I swooped in and took her up on it. We were gone 1.5 hours and came home to find out that Diva screamed her head off the whole time. When she saw us, she started in with an evil toddler laugh. Our sitter could not get out of our house fast enough. I hope I paid her enough. *sigh* Back to the drawing board.

Running Tidbits
Sarge and I started week 4 of C25K day 1. We ran most of our 30 minutes. We did 3 and 5 minute intervals. I admit they were hard! I think I actually had tears in my eyes doing the one of the 5 minute intervals. I kept thinking that I will look back on this and laugh at how difficult this starting back up business was. I just hope it gets easier soon. At least the weather is getting nicer so it makes it easier to get out there.

Other Shiz
When it comes to operating my Garmin 50, I get a failing grade. I am Garmintarded. Although I am notorious for not reading an instruction manual, I have read this thing cover to cover multiple times. I have also been on the horn to Garmin's customer service a few times. They are very helpful, but low and behold I do not experience the problems when I am on the phone with them.

I love having a gadget that tracks things for me, but I could never figure this thing out. I think after almost a year, I am getting closer to knowing what I am doing. Well....the manual that I have is the "quick start" manual. I googled and found the actual owners manual that went into way more detail. I think it helped as I got my HRM to work on my run today (at least I think I did). Now I just need to figure out how to do the uploads successfully. I installed training center on my computer, and I signed up with Garmin Connect. Garmin Gurus, which one do you use? Is one better than the other?

PSA and Weekend Ramblings

Today's PSA
Eat Fiber One bars at your own risk!

(warning, TMI alert)
I bought these with the expectation of having a filling snack while satisfying my sweet tooth. I was impressed by the 9 grams of fiber and they tasted really good. I thought it was even better that I only had to sacrifice 2 Weight Watcher points on this almost candy bar like treat.
All was well until about an hour later.....then the stomach pain started. It got so bad that I was almost doubled over. Then I realized it was GAS pain. My stomach was making noises I have never heard before and they were LOUD. My co-workers were commenting on how they could hear the rumblings. I could actually feel the gas bubble move through my intestines. The pain subsided but only to leave me with 2 days of the worst flatulence. I put Chubby Hubby to shame with the noises I could produce. Normally I am immature enough to think a good fart story is funny but this was over the top even for me. Chubby Hubby had a similar issue after consuming these. Please consider yourself warned. I wonder what would happen if someone had the guts to eat 2 in one day. Yowsa!

Weekend Wrap Up
Weight Watcher's weigh in was a joke this week! I was up 3.8lbs. Funny I am back down to my current week's weight as of today. Sometimes I really hate having to weigh in at night. I do believe the candy and the salt consumption played a role in some of the gain. Thankfully it didn't "stick", at least a few glasses of water was enough to flush it back out. I really want to do well this week so I am eating as clean as possible.

I broke it to my husband that I picked out paint and that we (by WE, I mean HE) will be painting very soon. Please note, I am always willing to help but I have been banned from painting in this house due to my lack of patience. Of course with the paint, I have picked out a couple of new accent pieces that would make the room complete. Don't you love how projects just snowball?

I am so happy the we are in the last week of February. I am in the peak of my winter funk. Just as the weather was getting "nicer" we got a bunch of snow and it got cold again. Usually by April, things start to get tolerable and going outside to run is much much more enjoyable. I hate wishing time away, but I wish Spring would come now.

I have a ton of catching up to do....230 posts to be exact. I have to say I LOVE Google Reader. I can't believe that it took me so long to discover it.

Wild Wednesday

I cannot complete a thought today but I have boring details I want to blog about.

  • Yesterday, I completed Wk3, Day 1 of C25K. Sarge has been picking up the pace and pushing me. While I think she is a total bitch for running faster than I want to, I also have to thank her for the extra push.
  • I didn't run at all this past weekend. I was rebelling and cranky because I was tired. I worked a lot and I was feeling sorry for myself. I did do the Shred DVD....once.
  • I went to bed at 10PM last night and set the alarm for 12:00 AM. I woke up and registered for the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon. I hope I get in as it is based on a random lottery. Sarge also signed up. We are hopeful!
  • I woke up to a poop covered Baby Diva. She learned how to take her own diaper off. Yuck! I am bleaching the house right now.
  • I tried donating blood last night but got the boot as my hemoglobin was too low. Boo! I am a regular donor because I have a friend who would not be here if it wasn't for several blood transfusions. I told my mom that I am a donor and she asked how much money I received. She gasped because she thought I was "selling" blood for extra money.
  • Work is driving me to drink. My work computer crashed 4 times in the middle of important things I was doing. I am not getting a new one for 3 weeks.
Anyway...that is all the random junk I have for today. I have a house begging to be cleaned.

Happy Valentine's Day

Remember all the candy from yesterday? This is the same candy that I vowed I would not touch. This is also the same candy that was send for my CHILDREN.

Yeah, I touched it.

Just one won't kill me.... When I snapped out of it, I there was a large pile of candy wrappers and I had to wipe the evidence of my caloric sin off my mouth. Don't worry, I justified my binge.

  • I have PMS
  • Chocolate is a good for the heart
  • It is a holiday weekend
  • Diva can't have peanuts yet so someone has to eat them
  • I am saving the kids' teeth
  • I am helping Chubby Hubby's weight loss journey
  • The faster I eat it, the faster it goes away
  • I would rather burn in hell than throw away a good Snickers bar (just kidding God)
  • I worked hard and pre-burned off half the calories from working. (That counts right?)
Although my justifications are wonderful (ha!), the scale is not going to thing so on Thursday. Now I am in rebound mode to try to undo the damage before the scale needle tips the other way.
Here is my plan:
  • Force feed kids candy
  • Back to veggies
  • Lots of water
  • She Devil DVD everyday this week
  • Continue C25K
I said it so now I have to do it.

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Photo Friday and End of the Week Tidbits

Happy Valentine's Day
This photo shows how spoiled my kids are by my parents.
*I will not touch the candy*
*I will not touch the candy*
*I will not touch the candy*

I can't believe another week is coming to an end. It has been a crazy week in our house. My retail gig scheduled me 35 hours on top of my regular job and on top of normal parenting duties. I am exhausted. While I still enjoy it, I wrote them a note changing my availability so that this kind of week doesn't happen again.

I didn't let being overworked give me an excuse to opt out of my workouts. Yesterday was Wk 2, Day 2 of C25k. Sarge and I ran over lunch. I was super windy and when we hit the bridges it was like running into a force field. She is the stop watch lady and the pace setter. I think she picked up the pace quite a bit because after the 90 seconds of running I was dry heaving and gasping for air breathing hard.

Wednesday, I pulled out the She Devil DVD and lived through the agonizing 20 minute workout. If you don't do it for a few days, you really go back to starting from ground zero. The Shred DVD is going to be done every other for me. Chubby Hubby is still doing it every day and has lost a bunch of weight. His jeans are literally falling off of him.

I was rewarded at the scale last night at my weigh-in. *Drum roll* Down -2 lbs! I was very excited that I lost the gain from last week and a little extra. I hope to have another good week.

Valentine's Day, who is celebrating? We don't really celebrate in our house because I am still holding a grudge over something that happened while Chubby Hubby and I were dating. We broke up on Valentine's Day 1994. Shhhhhh, don't tell him I am over it, I am just too cheap to buy the crap. Ha!

Have a great weekend!

Pre-run Fuel

I now hold the world record for fastest time consuming a candy bar. The chocolate shown above inhaled as I was leaving my desk to go for a run. I was a mood. A really REALLY bad one. It so happened that a coworker of mine had a box of candy bars on her desk for a fundraiser. I had the calling.....I needed to do my part to help her child. Guilt-free chocolate as far as I am concerned.

I have to say:
Chocolate + Run = Happy Carly

Now, I can go about my day with out ripping someones head off.

Sarge and I completed Wk 2, day one of the Couch to 5K program. We did 30 minutes rather than the recommended 20. The running portion jumped up from 60 seconds to 90 seconds. Not a ton of time, but enough to make us pant. It was a great run and although there was a cold rain, the warmer weather makes it easy to go out.

I kind of dropped the ball the last few nights. I got off of work rather late and came home and had a 2nd dinner. I did not have the points for it and I WAY over did it. I realized I ate dinner at 4PM and then was starving at midnight. Next time, I will pack a snack to have on a break rather than not eating and scarfing food down when I get home. I am crossing my fingers that these small slips won't affect the scale too much on Thursday as I am hoping for another drop.

A Fun Way to Cross Train

Ice Skating.

Finally! Minnesota is having some decent weather. Yesterday, we decided to have some quality family time and do an outing. We have a great skating area not too far from our house and we took advantage of this nice winter day.

This was EFK's first time on skates.
I got a double workout from hoisting him up after he would fall.
Diva leading Chubby Hubby around the ice.

#1 caught on quick. This is only his 2nd time on the ice.
HOT! Nothing is more sexy than rented skates
Diva loved the ice. We had to keep her from licking it.

My legs are definitely feeling it today. If winter could be like this all the time, I wouldn't mind it so much. Today it is raining and just kind of dreary. I am glad we got out when we did.

This week we are on week 2 of Couch to 5K.

The Nerve!

As the world knows by now, I have started "running" again (can I officially call C25K running? Well, I am.) My running gear seems to be in some sort of shock that it is being put to use this week. For instance when I tried strapping on my running kicks, I found all sorts of goodies stuffed in the shoes such as my lipgloss, travel deodorant, and chapstick. It was like my shoes purposely stole the stuff and when I missed it bad enough I would check the shoes. Nope. I am just finding it now after several months. Then, both my Garmin and iPod decided that since I haven't been needing them, they banded together and decided they were on strike as well. Both dead.

Because I felt like running with some tunes, I decided to take Chubby Hubby's iPod. He has all sorts of songs and podcasts on his. Since I wasn't in the mood for any political crap he had saved, I turned it to a random mix of his song library. Lets just say it is time for an iPod makeover. There were a few songs that took me back to my marathon training time of the summer of 2006, there was some craptastic country tunes (WTF?), and worst of all kid tunes. I was running along when I picked up the pace and started belting out Laurie Berkner. When I realized what I was doing....the song was just about over. That is just wrong, wrong, wrong. Especially since 2 out of my 3 kidlets prefer classic rock or metal.

If you ever want a run to go quick, take someone else's iPod. It will make you say WTF.

One week down of C25k and 7 to go! I am off to try a hell session with our favorite bad ass trainer, Jillian.

Friday, February 6, 2009

It had to happen sometime this winter, I caught my first cold. When I started feeling the symptoms, I started taking Zicam. This time it didn't work and now I just need to suck it up and accept the sniffles. I hope it is a quick one.

Here is my week recap in bullets:
  • I am up 1.2lbs. I am not too upset as it follows my gain every 4th week pattern.
  • We are having a heatwave (30 degrees) so I walked a couple of miles to and from my meeting last night.
  • I completed Week 1, Day 2 without injury.
  • My bruises are now a purply-green color.
  • I bought a Plantar Fasciitis brace and it seems to be helping.
That is about all I have. I am bracing myself for a really busy weekend. We have lots of kid activities, house projects and and have to work.

Have a great weekend!

Soreness and an Interview

I am in PAIN today. I really messed myself up yesterday. I know my wrist is not broken, it still hurts but at least I can type. My knee is size of a grapefruit and my hip is going to be one of those bruises that turns all kinds of fun colors. For now, I have been popping some Advil and icing a bit. I should be back to normal in few days when the scrapes and bruises heal.

While the pain is causing me to not be on my hands and knees scrubbing my floor today, it is not stopping me from running tomorrow. I have my bag packed and I am ready for day 2 of C25K. Word on the street is that it is supposed to be warmer out. Woo Hoo!

I am going to set up Google Reader and figure that out. Hopefully that will help me keep up with all of your great blogs. (Am I the only person not using this?)

Here is my interview that Teacherwoman sent to me:

1. If you could choose to travel anywhere in the U.S., where would you go and why?

Ohhh there is so many places to choose from, so I will narrow it down to two places.

My first pick, New York City. I went one time and LOVED it. We didn't really do anything touristy, but we walked around a lot. I love the history and I loved how busy it was.

Next, Hawaii. I have never been, but heard it is beautiful..

2. What do you look forward to most in 2009?
Becoming a runner again and signing up for some races.

3. What is one of you favorite pass times, away from working out?

Photography. I love taking photos and every chance I get I am either taking a class or reading up on how to do something new.

4. If you were given a million dollars and not allowed to use it on yourself or your family, what would you do with it?
It would be cool to split it up a bit and give it to a few families that lost everything through no fault of their own.

5. What is one of your biggest fears?

Do you want to play along? Here are the rules:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. (I get to pick the questions).
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview others in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
Have fun!

First Run of the New Year

I biffed it. Flew through the air Superman fashion and hit the very frozen ground. Hard. Really really hard.

I got up.

I kept going.

This is either a sign that I should hang up running forever or that I am tough enough to call myself a runner. I am choosing the later statement.

Now I must tend to my bleeding knee, bruised hip, and wrist that could possibly be broken (I am typing one handed).

Today's workout:
30 minutes. Week one, Day one, Couch to 5K.

Free Day

I have decided to experiment with something that I call a "free day". It is a day without journaling and letting myself have basically anything I want (within reason). I know this sounds like a slippery downward slope but there is a method to my madness and I have "rules".

I can be quite the crazy person sometimes. I follow the program to the letter, have a bad day (week), then chalk it up to a failed attempt. Rather than starting the vicious cycle over and over again, I am building in a "cheat" day to my program. That way I am not expected to do it perfect, I am just expecting myself to make progress. I am going to try it for a few weeks and see how it goes. It might just blow up in my face, but it might workout for the best too.

The rules:
  • The splurge has to be really worth it...if I am going to eat sweets, the better the good stuff or homemade.
  • I must use self control with not eating an entire pint of ice cream.
  • I must get some sort of physical activity.
  • Right back on the program.
This is how my "free day" went down yesterday. We went out to breakfast at one of my favorite places. I ordered a half order of blueberry cakes....I normally get the full. Lunch was some raw veggies. Then last night I had a cocktail, some cheese and crackers, and veggie loaded taco salad. Then to top off the evening, I had a dish of Espresso Chip ice cream. It was heavenly. Looking at what I ate, I KNOW I went over my target but I don't think it was way out of line. I worked at my retail job for 4 hours which was non stop walking. Today I am back on the program with no guilt.

What are you thoughts on a free day? Does anyone else do this?

Tomorrow is the big Couch to 5k program kick off. I have my gym bag packed so I have no excuses when I get to work tomorrow. I just pray that it warms up. This weekend it felt like spring and today we are back to our negative temps. Either way, I am pumped to start running again.

Here is a little something for the Jack Bauer fan. This clip really cracked me up. If you are familiar with song from Team America World Police and the show 24, you should be able to appreciate the humor.

My husband and I giggle every time he says "dammit" on the show. I guess there is even a drinking game. Any other Jack Bauer fans out there?
