Stonyfield Farm Oikos Review

I finally found this product so here it goes.....

WTF????? Seriously, I better shit gold at this price!!! This is per container and if I didn't have a free coupon this would not be an item in my cart. I have a family of 5 to feed and one container of this yogurt costs about as much as a gallon of milk. Organic or not...simply not an affordable product.
Here it goes....I bought 2 containers. Honey and Plain. Those were my only two options.
I have to be honest, honey and yogurt don't make good visual.

I got me a Guinea pig to try it first

Diva will try anything! I appeared as though she liked it so I gave it a try. Now I am not huge on dairy but I went for it. The first bite of this stuff tasted like vomit. I kept going to give this stuff a fair shake. The texture was great. It was thick and creamy. The taste grew on me but left a bad after taste. Blech.
Diva loved it and I thought it was just good (not great). Nevertheless we finished the container.

She licked it clean!

The plain flavor I am going to make a Tzatziki sauce to put on some Greek burgers. I don't see me eating that stuff as is. I would need to doctor it up a bit. I seem to recall that others found this stuff in other flavors. Is that true? Maybe I am being too harsh as these flavors were not the greatest.

Overall, I don't think it is a bad product and I ended up liking the taste OK, but for the price I would never in million years buy it....unless of course it promised me I would be at my goal weight in 3 weeks.

Thank you to Stonyfield Farms for giving me the opportunity to review your product.

Ha Ha Ha! I didn't like the honey either. On the Greek yogurt I love FAGE it is SO much better than the Oikos brand. About the same price wise. That is why the kiddo never gets it! He will eat the cheaper stuff anyway.

I agree - the honey does not look like an appealing eat! You have some nice diva photos though :)

Ha! That cute kid totally makes up for the so-so yogurt. :o)

LOL, love the pics of diva diggin in. Not sure if they sell that stuff up here, but have heard the same comment about the price. Great review!

I agree, that is just too steep for yogurt!

Still, I hope the plain makes a yummy tzatziki for you!

Last time I looked our Oikos didn't cost that much. Yikes! But Fage did. :) As for Oikos I, too, didn't care much for it at all. But like EMama I looove Fage. Except for your price for Oikos is my price for Fage. And there's no way I'm getting that stuff for my kids, lol. We are big yog eaters and it's not uncommon to eat a whole 32 container in a meal for us. They get the other brands, I'm so selfish - I save the Fage for me. Ha! Oh and I think these yog companies put to much honey in, yuck. Cute kiddo!

I actually liked teh honey vanilla, however I could not eat the plain alone. Smart choice using it for cooking. And yes, this is explensive, definitely not in my budget.

I have only gotten the FAGE and that is for specific recipes. Never occurred to me to actually try it plain!

Ate some greek yogurt this morning...strawbeery and it was great. Very rich tasting and the consistency of sour cream really. We have real flavors - not plain and honey, barf-o!

You certainly don't bow down to the coporate "man" do you? Very funny.

I bet they are regretting asking you to review. "It tasted like vomit" isn't exactly a rave!

Yikes, that's spendy! Like the pictures of diva. :)

I'm not a big fan of the honey flavored either. I love Fage, but I usually buy the Trader Joes version as it is much cheaper and almost as good.

Love the pics!

Hahahaha! Excellent review, sister!

So it's been 4 hours - have you sh*t gold yet? Man, wouldn't it suck if you pooped exactly $2.28 worth of gold? because then you wouldn't even be breaking even.

Not to mention pooping gold's gotta hurt just a little, don't you think?

(Teh 'Bride doesn't buy yogurt until she can get 10 containers for $2.29.)

I think everyone has tried this but me. does seem VERY expensive though...

Trader Joes has Greek Style yogurt. It costs less than that for about twice as much. I buy the plain and use it instead of sour cream.

My favorite part of this post are the child proof locks on the cupboard behind Diva as she's licking her fingers clean...Is that where you hide the chocolate?

Just a little high for yogurt. I will stick to my Dannon shakes.

I finally found this stuff in the store, and was going to pick up a container to see what all of the fuss was about.

I came to the same conclusion you did, without ever buying it. I saw the price and was like "Uhmm... it's yogurt. I don't even like yogurt THAT much. (I mean, it's OK, but it's not $2.xx worth of enjoyment)"

Hi Carly,

Thanks for the honest review of our product. I just want to provide a little clarification as to why Oikos Organic is more expensive than standard yogurt.

1)It uses three times the milk as standard yogurt. Becuase it is triple strained - to remove the whey- it actually contains a larger quantity of milk than regualr yogurt does (3X the amount!). Not all Greek yogurts are strained in this authentic way, and some just contain thickeners.

2) It's Organic - it's made without artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners, and it's made from organic milk produced without the use of toxic persistent pesticides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, or artificial growth hormones (ie rBST). Also, becuase it's organic, the farmers that produce our milk for us are guaranteed to make a living wage.

Thank you everyone for all of your comments about pricing - it will be forwarded on to the correct folks over here at Stonyfield.

Take care,
Kristina

lol. heck i'll buy/eat anything if it'll guarantee my goal weight for life! sign me up.

that pricing though is through the roof. i know the oikos rep gave some reasons for it but still you gotta price competitively. all of the reviews i've read complained about the price, and said they'd have a hard time justifying the purchase.

Hey I agree with you on the price family of 6 over here, but once I added some granola, agave and fruit it was the only way I could see myself eating yogurt (I am definitely not a yogurt person) Well I really look forward to following your blog.
