Office Email

Somedays at work I just shake my head. I received the email below this afternoon from our Admin Assistant:

Hi Everyone, I want to apologize for the shrimp and garlic smell. I thought I was going to have a great lunch (not) I never want to see shrimp with it's head and eyes and legs again. :-D The garlic sauce was well you may have just given me head of garlic. Oh well you live and learn. :-) Happy Friday All!

Wow, just wow. I could start a blog just about life in my office. There never is a dull moment. Today's episode literally sent people dry heaving from the smell.

Blogable Mind Dump:

Today is day one of my wearing my pedometer for the research study I signed up for. I have already walked almost 2 miles and the day is still young! Seven more days of recording and then an inperson interview will wrap up the first of four sessions.

Tomorrow is birthday mania! Lord help me!!!!!!!!! Is it appropriate to make jello shots for a kid party? kidding. sort of.

By the looking at my weekend schedule, I most likely will not be getting 12 miles done. *sigh*

Is it sad that I am more excited to have the bounce house delivered than the kids are?

Speaking of kids, I would like to thank my nephews for keeping my kids entertained. Who would have thought that having 5 kids would be easier than having just my three.

I have to bake tonight. I am not going to lie...I am slightly scared. I don't bake.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

A Wild Wednesday in Bullets

I am up to my ears in to do lists, so it only seems appropriate to write a blog post in the same format.

Wednesday's Random Thoughts:
  • Kids are HOME! Everyone had a great time! People at work kept telling me how "relaxed" I looked. It is amazing what a break will do to a person.
  • Must finalize Birthday Extravaganza. 3 parties, 3 cakes, 20 kids, and 1 bounce house...all in one day. Note: find nearest liquor store.
  • I must clean and shop for said party.
  • When am I going to run???
  • Kids are leaving again tonight. One more night of relaxation. When they return, I get 2 extra kiddos. OMG!!! 5 KIDS! Relaxation O-V-E-R!
  • Weight Watchers is going to be a joke this week....eating/drinking marathon with Chubby Hubby was fun.
  • Wonder if I can clone myself to get through the stack of work at the office?
  • I am going to sneak a quick workout in at lunch. 20 minutes on the elliptical machine = 1 Dilly Bar from DQ. Damn you co-workers that bring treats!
  • Off to do my to do lists

Weekend Wrap-up

The awesome factor of this weekend was ranked "extremely high". Why? Because I have been doing absolutely nothing. My parents were kind enough to take all three kids for a few days because we do not have childcare next week. While my kids are having fun with the grandparents, I have been doing a little RnR. Chubby Hubby and I have been able to hang out and actually finish a conversation. Imagine that,a real conversation. I also was able to sleep in and have brunch at one of my favorite places today. I miss my little munchkins, but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy a the quiet time.

I finally had to suck it up and buy a new pair of running shoes. Shopping for new running shoes is about as bad as shopping for a swimming suit. I feel so out of place walking into a running shop. Everyone that works there are "typical" runners and weigh about 100lbs. My very first time I got fitted for running shoes, the guy helping me told me I needed a motion control shoe because they were better for "heavier runners". Ever since then,I feel like everyone is staring at me thinking "Oh, look at the fat girl taking on running". I do realize that thought is my own insecurity shining through.

Marathon training has really been hard. My weekday runs have been getting skipped because of family obligations and my long runs are suffering. I can't go a week without running and expect to pull off double digit mileage. Today's run ended up being a 4 mile run/walk. Meh. At least the shoes felt good.

I will continue to train and I will do the best that I can for this race. However, going forward I don't think I will be doing any more marathons until the kids are a bit older. I don't seem to have enough time to devote to training right now. In one of the conversations I had with Chubby Hubby, we agreed that running shorter races wold be more realistic right now.

Tomorrow is back to work and I am very excited because Sarge will be back! She has been gone for almost a month for some training. Until then I am going back to enjoy my precious quiet time.

A Little Note

Dear Coworker that Uses Alli,

I commend you for taking the initiative to control your weight. I wonder if you read the fine print of the package? Especially the part that reads about the warnings, specifically the part about loose oily stools. As a person that shares the office rest room with you, I would really appreciate a double or triple flush after a bathroom break. I don't appreciate walking into a toilet stall with orange oily residue in the bowl. Thankfully there was a clean stall open, however, others had the same surprise upon entering the ladies room. I do have to show some appreciation, because after I was done gagging and dry heaving, I lost my appetite and didn't eat my lunch. For that, I thank you.

All the best with your weight loss efforts, you certainly are helping me with mine.

Monday Already?

It is a sign of a great weekend when I am sitting here fighting to stay awake while I type up this post. I really could use another day to get the stuff the rest of the stuff on my to do list done.

I may have mentioned in a prior post that both of my boys are not riding their bikes without training wheels. They finally worked up the courage to try it and it didn't take them long to catch on. The great thing about this is that we have found that bike riding incorporates exercise and quality time with the children. They love it and it is quite fun.

Saturday we purchased a bike trailer for Diva. She loves it so much that we thought we might not get her out of it. I am excited because now we can go with the whole family rather than switching off Diva Duty. I am excited to make this a new evening routine while we still have nice weather.

Speaking of has been unseasonably cold here. In fact, they closed the pools down for a few days because temps were only in the 50s and 60s. I am not real happy about our summer having fall temps but it does make it nice for running!

Food Foto Friday...

I had to share a picture of my breakfast. A chocolate scone. This photo does not do it justice. The devil made me do it and it was worth every single Weight Watcher point. How many points? 14!! I will be eating very light for the rest of the day. It was still worth it.

It has been kind of low key week. I have been under the weather with a fabulous Summer cold thanks to Baby Diva and under the gun with work deadlines. Since the cold has settled in my chest I have put running on the back burner this week. Zero miles logged so far. I am going to adjust my long run schedule for this weekend. I am going to redo the 9 mile run that I did this past Sunday and push out the scheduled 12 miler to the next week.

Weight Watchers was good this week. I am down 5 lbs! My self-imposed kick in the ass worked and started the scale in the right direction. I have to admit having people jump on board at work is helping stay on plan. Everyone has been bringing lunches and exercising on breaks. Next week I am hooking up with the group known as the Sweatin' to the Oldies Crew and we are heading back to the gym.

My neck is 100000% better. I saw the miracle worker 2 more times and I can actually turn my head. I feel great!

I am so glad it is Friday!!! Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Thank God for Advil!

This pain in my neck is really starting to annoy me. I am still having a hard time turning my head and sleeping has been almost impossible. My miracle worker chiropractor is helping but there is still one big problem in my neck shoulder area that just is being stubborn. I am doing just about everything I can think of to get relief: heat, ice, massage, chiropractor, foam roller, narcotics, pissing, moaning, and Advil. So far Advil seems to be the only winner.

The old saying "I haven't got time for the pain" was my motto this weekend. Afterall, I have a marathon to train for and I have already missed enough big runs. Friday and Saturday I attempted the training runs and ended up ralking (run/walk) for only 2.7 miles. Today, I rocked if I do say so myself. I completed the scheduled 9 miles in 1:45 (that is pretty quick for me). I felt great the entire time. I took a few Advil prior and stretched prior to getting out there. Whatever I did worked to get me through it. Now that the run is over, I don't feel any worse. I am crossing my fingers that this issue resolves itself soon.

As usual, there is never a dull moment when I am out on a run. Today's sighting stopped me in my tracks. There was a guy, a young chap walking in my direction. I noticed he was staggering a bit and walking really really slow. When I got closer, I noticed he was carrying a drink, was missing an eyebrow, and had a large penis drawn on his face in permanent marker. I was laughing so hard I had to stop running and call Chubby Hubby. Too bad I didn't have a camera. I guess this dude had to learn the hard way...don't pass out.

Five Miles That Did Not Happen

I wanted to be writing about a glorious 5 miler that I completed this evening. I was going to be a great run, I just knew it. But it didn't happen.

Because I have an ailment of a 70 year old woman. I did something to my neck and I can not turn my head. I seriously look like Frankenstein. So rather than strapping on the running shoes, I was strapped to my chiropractor's table. I spent an hour of bone cracking fun in her office.

I have been dealing with a bad muscle knot in my shoulder blade for about 6 weeks. I just figured I slept on it funny and it would work itself out. It has been gradually getting worse and today everything went into a spasm which resulted in me not being able to move.

I definitely feel a lot better after my visit with the miracle worker but I am still in a lot of pain. I hope by my next visit later this week, I should be feeling good. I do not want to miss any more runs now that I am getting up there with mileage with the long runs.

Two steps forward, one back. At least it is nothing too serious to keep me out of the game.

Research Subject

I signed on to be a human lab rat. I received a letter from a researcher looking for participants to help gather data about how working mothers fit in exercise into their day. The study is being funded by one of the health care systems along with a few local investigators that are interested in developing health programs targeted at busy moms. Since I am a working mother with young kids and I work in research, this study was interesting to me. So I agreed to help out.

My commitment is 4 interviews, 2 in person and 2 via telephone over a 12 month period. I need to track my movement with a pedometer for a week prior to each meeting. The criteria to be eligible for the study was to have children under 9 years old, to work outside of the home, and to be at least 18 years of age. I fit their profile.

It sounds pretty painless. There was no mention being strapped down to a table to take DNA samples. They are also compensating me with Target gift cards. Who doesn't like a Tar-jay gift card? What do I have to lose? Maybe this will keep me motivated to stay on the wagon.

Speaking of exercise, I got out and did my 4.2 mile training run tonight. I felt heavy and sick to my was probably because I ate spaghetti 20 minutes before heading out. My PSA: Don't do that. The training program said I needed to do hills. I wasn't in the mood to travel outside my 'hood tonight so I just headed out and hit up some steep stairs leading to a freeway overpass. Good enough in my book.

Independence Rocks!

I love 4th of July. This is one of my favorite holidays, it is tied for first place with Christmas. Every year our city puts on a 4th celebration that includes a kiddie parade, a creepy ass carnival, street dance, car show, a great parade, and a wonderful fireworks display. It is a multi-day celebration and we always try to make the most of it.

Normally we try to have a big ol' bash on the 4th at the Casa de Chubby because the parade route is right outside our door. It is a so great to have where it is we have food, drinks, and entertainment. This year the party was on the small side but nevertheless still tons of fun. We even had a special guest, the Mayor of Minneapolis marched his posse through our house prior to the parade starting. I offered him and his underage kids a cocktail, but they declined. I think he wanted to stay clean for while he runs for the Governor's seat or maybe it was because it was only 9AM.

Here is a few pics from the parade.

Chubby Hubby sporting a gift from the Mayor's visit. I was really impressed with his behavior, he didn't yell "Carly, get the gun....there is a Liberal in the house!" (Just kidding...he is not THAT bad)

Diva mixing up some margaritas getting ready for the party. Just kidding it was only Kool-aid, the margaritas were already mixed up by the other children.

This is what the streets looked like at 8AM....the parade didn't start until 1PM and there were people sitting in their chairs.

My neighbor and spawn #1 riding the beer cooler. This thing was a hit! I think I need one of these.
Spawn #2 really getting into the festivities. He really was doing everything to get the most candy.

Diva shoveling candy in her mouth as fast as she can.
#1 taking the beer cooler for a spin. He has to learn to drive sometime. Ain't we classy? Ha!

BFF's Hubby practicing his pose for the next stud muffin book of the decade book. He is sporting a new mustache. Young Tom Seleck? Yes?I totally see the resemblance. BWAH!

I thought he should keep the 'stache but I think my BFF had another opinion.

It makes him look so kid friendly...Maybe I should do a blog poll. Should he keep it?

Then of course there were fire works. My hubby walked up to the park with #2 to view them and I stayed home with #1 and Diva and watched them from the neighbors house. After that I collapsed into bed. It was a long exhausting day but it was a lot of fun!

Hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July. Until next year....Independence Rocks!

Oh yeah.....Sunday I ran 7.27 miles semi hungover. It was a GREAT run and I am not quite sure how I pulled it off. As far as time I am not sure. It was slow 11-12 minute miles, but I didn't care because the run was that good.
