3 Things Thursday

1.  I officially HATE Jillian Michaels.  I just completed my 20th day and tried level 3.
My thoughts....

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!  Traveling push-ups?  Right.

I am dropping back down to level 1 because my shoulders are feeling like they are dislocated because of all the plank work.  I refuse to "phone it in", but damn, this woman is out to kill me.  Come Hell or high water I will do these last 10 workouts...even if it does kill me.
On a positive note...
I am seeing results.  Good ones.  My pants are fitting better and my face is slimming down to the point of seeing cheek bones again!  I guess I can't hate her that much.  I am also 5lbs down (I was expecting Biggest Loser numbers but I am not complaining).

2.   I have my next goal in mind.  I want to run the Irish for a Day 5K in March.  I have been putting off running because of the cold weather and icy roads.  However, I just found out that the Field House that is attached to the Rec Center is available is open during the time I go during the day.  I can get a decent base built up indoors without getting frost bite.

3.  Housecleaning, laundry, and catching up with blogs are all things that I am very behind on doing.  The kids have all been attacked by germs this week.  We have had the full range of puking to Pink Eye.  I am not going to say it twice, but I think everyone is healthy.  **holding breath** I hope to get caught up on everything this weekend.  I can't tell you how glad I am to see Friday on the calendar tomorrow!!!

Double Trouble

Today my middle monster had to stay home from school today because he was still feeling sick.  Chubby Hubby and I were able to split they day and hang out with him.  I was with him in the morning and he said, "Don't you need to do Jillian, Mom?".   CRAP.  Even my sick kid is holding me accountable.  So I grumbled and popped in the DVD that I have grown to both love and hate.

I completed day 17 of Shred and that means I only have 13 more workouts to go!!!!   I worked out hard.  Maybe too hard.  I ended up with some weird pulled muscle type pain in my back and shoulder.   In fact, I had to pull out the Biofreeze and icepacks.  All this plank business is KILLING my shoulders and not in "good pain" sort of way.  Ahhhhh only 13 more days!

I did go to the office this afternoon.  Since my schedule was different today I packed gym clothes.  I am pushing it with getting my 8 times this month and I am going to get my $20 if it kills me.   My trusty calendar tells me that I am going to have to go every day this week.  It is funny how much money is a motivator.

This week at my gym they are having "Jam Week".  This is the first week of the semester and all group fitness classes are free.   A coworker and I set out to try a spin class.  It filled up right away and we didn't have the opportunity to try it.  Bummer.   However, there was a 60 minute conditioning class that was available.  We did it!  It was hard, I sweat like a pig, and I got another kick ass workout.

I am not sure how I go from feeling injured to wanting to do another workout in one day.  Could this be the return of my long lost Mojo???  Two hard workouts in one day?!?!  I am not sure who I am becoming, but I am liking the muscles that are forming.

I am going to be feeling this in the morning!  Please pass the Advil.

Weekend Wrap-Up and a Product Review

This weekend wasn't the greatest and it certainly wasn't the worst.

Friday set the tone when my work computer got a virus and completely wiped out all the work I had done for that day. Thankfully most of the stuff was backed up but, I have to start from scratch redoing all my personal settings when the IT guys fix my computer. I won't know when it will be getting fixed and I will have to be working out of another cube. It is a real pain in the ass. Although it is a GREAT reminder for me to back up all of my personal items at home.

My middle child caught some crazy virus and he is been miserable all weekend. The poor kid just looks like death.  Truth be told, I am feeling a little under the weather myself.  I have a scratchy throat and body aches.  He and I spend most of the day Saturday sleeping.

To top it all off, the weather has been really strange. We have been getting rain. It is gray and damp. Everything looks so dirty and gross. If this stuff freezes, we are going to be in a world of trouble!  It was a great weekend to stay indoors.

Even though it was quite the BLAH weekend....I was able to complete day 14, 15, and 16 of Shred. I have not missed a day.  Seriously, I have not ever been this committed to anything.  Even if I start projectile vomiting, I will continue to do this.  Three people on Friday told me my face was starting to look thinner.  That right there is motivation enough to do Shred everyday.

On to the product review:
I had the opportunity to review toddler hair clips from Ladybugs N Butterflies.  For the sake of full disclosure sent me 2 clips for me to keep in exchange for my feedback.

I was excited to review this product even though it has nothing to do with running or fitness.  I was excited by because Diva's hair always looks as it does in the photo below.

I chose the two clips below.  On the website, the all of the products have names.  The bee clip is the Kira Abigail  and the cow is the Karli Anne (haha that is my name, I had to have it even though it is spelled different)
All of the clips are handmade and are very good quality.  The clips were very comfortable (no poking or pinching) and they were very secure.  One of the great things about these hair accessories is that you are able to customize the clip to your preference.  They have an alligator style, french barrette, toddler and infant snappy clips, as well as some hair binders (click here to view).  They have a great online catalog with a huge selection of adorable hair items. (

Diva hates me coming near her hair.  It is a workout just to get a brush through it.  With a little bribery (ice cream) she allowed me to put these in.  She seemed to like them and actually kept them in longer than other hair clips.   While I really love these, I have to wait until she is a bit older to use them (she is only 2).  I can't speak for all toddlers, but mine pulls ANY barrette/clip out.  These are simply way too cute for her to destroy.  We will pull them out for special occasions and photos.

Even though Diva might be too young for them, I do think that I would buy more of these for gifts.  They are cute, great quality, and unique.

Thank you so much to Ladybugs N Butterflies for the sample of your product.  I enjoyed the opportunity to review.

Three Things Thursday

Jewelry Parties
Dammit.  I got sucked in again.  I was wined and dined into buying "home party" jewelry. Thankfully I got away without completely breaking the bank.  I spent $19 on a cute glass bead bracelet. It will go great with my Goldy Gopher black fleece jacket.

Wine seems to be my home party Spanish Fly.  Slip me some and you will have an order in your hand.  Give me a couple of glasses and I might even book a party.  As much as I hate home parties, I am a sucker for them.  I always fall into the "it is just an fun way to get everyone together" bit.

Bloggity Dreams
This morning marked the second time I woke up and remembered a very detailed weird dream that involved my blogging friends.  Iron Missy was getting married and she was giving away workout DVDs that she created as wedding favors ???!!!  Carolina John was also there and Chubby Hubby kept telling him he looked like Sean Hannity (VERY sorry Missy and CJ, it was just a dream).

Dang, now I really have to convince people that I am not some crazy stalker weirdo.  Does this mean I spend too much time in Blogland?  I think I should take these dreams as a hint not to hop on the computer to catch up on blog reading at 3AM when I cannot sleep.

Am I the only one that has had dreams about people she has never met in real life?

  •  I just came back from a quickie  lunch time bike workout.  I went almost 5 miles in 20 minutes on a random hill setting.
  • Day 12 of Shred was also completed last night.  I am almost to the half way point!!!!
  • We are getting some sleety garbage that has made the roads a complete mess so I am holding off on another run until the weekend.
  • On deck for tonight is Jillian workout #13.

"Gargle Your Heart!!!"

As if level one of Jillian Michaels Shred is not scary enough, during the cardio circuit of level two she yells:

DONE! Thanks Jillian.

This woman is going to be in my nightmares.  I can't imagine what level 3 is going to be like if level 2 is my vision of hell.  I survived.  Barely.  My arms are still shaking from this workout but I now I can say I have 11 Shred workouts under the belt!   (A new Chubby Chick record!)

Moving on to other things...
Yesterday I decided that it was time to dust off the Sauconies and start running again.  It was a beautiful day with temps in the 30's (at least it felt like it).  It was one of the rare days in the middle of a Minnesota winter that it was mild enough to spend some enjoyable time outdoors.  I would be an absolute fool not to take advantage and enjoy a decent January day.  So, I grabbed the iPod and I was out the door.

I started running after a 5 minute warm up and although I was sore, it felt really good to be out there.  The sun was shining and Lady Gaga was jamming on the iPod.  I thought to myself that I might be able to run the whole route without taking any walk breaks.

Then the next block came and every muscle in my body was screaming!  My knees, my calves, and even my abs were on fire!  Jillian's workouts are really kicking my ass!  It didn't help that the streets and sidewalks were a mix of slushy snow and ice.  Damn they were slick!!!

Thumbs up.  I was hurting but not dead!

OHHHH....and I biked 4 miles today at the gym.  That makes 2 days in a row with double workouts.  I got my first star on the calendar for getting to the gym this month, only 7 more to go to get my $20 health reward payback.   That reward sure makes it easy to go to the gym, especially when the membership ends up costing almost nothing.

Both yesterday and today were highly productive.  I just hope I can get out of bed tomorrow and have some use of my muscles.

Weekend Wrap-Up Bullet Style

  • Day 9 of Shred is DONE.  I am still experiencing sore muscles.   Good?  It must be the fear leaving my body.  21 more days left....GAWD that seems like a lot of time.
  • I might be imagining things, but I think my calf muscles are starting to return.
  • Calories tend to add up quick when adult beverages are involved.
  • Way to go Vikings!!!  I am not much of a football fan, but Chubby Hubby is REALLY happy after today's win.
  • Operation pantry restock was completed (during the football game of course).  My pantry was absolutely pathetic.  I offered organic split pea soup to my middle child and he turned up his nose.  After that, I knew it was time to get to the store.
  • Diva is still doing well after our unnecessary visit to the ER.  Though she is still hacking up a lung.
  • I played several games of Operation with my middle child today and found myself getting really competitive.....against a 5 year old.
  • I started reading my 2nd Celia Rivenbark book "You Can't Drink All Day If You Don't Start in the Morning".  It is funny as hell! I even found it at the library.
  • I get to get my Jack Bauer fix tonight as they are playing the last episode from last season and then the new series starts tomorrow!!
  • Did I mention that I have tomorrow off?!
  • Tomorrow's to do list:
    • Babysit BFFs Children (yes, she trusts me...silly girl.  Her kids will be swearing in no time).
    • Make Beef Stroganoff recipe taken from the Cooking Light website.
    • Go for a run. Yes, a run.  I am ready to start again.  I need something to loosen my muscles up from all these Jillian workouts.  It might not be pretty but I have to take advantage of some of these mild temps.
    • Speaking of Jillian, she is on the list too....tomorrow will mark the last day of level one.

Emergency Rooms and Beer

Emergency Room
I had to take Diva to Children's Hospital today.  She has a minor cough for a couple of days.  This afternoon she went off on a major coughing fit that didn't quit.  I gave her a nebulizer treatment and she got WORSE.  I even took her outside in the cool air to see if that helped.  No luck.  After I exhausted every trick I knew at home, it was time to take her in.  She was coughing so hard in the car she was gagging really having a hard time getting her breath.  I pulled her out of the car and we ran into the ER.

As we sat down in triage, there was nothing.  Not a cough, not a sniffle.  There was just a happy go lucky toddler with a smile on her face.  The nurse asked why we were there and I told them.  They checked her lungs.  Fine.  They looked at me like I was nuts.  Finally she make a noise that sounded like a cough.  I gave them the "see she really is sick" look and I swear they wrote down "Mother is a looney" on her chart.

We waited to see the doctor and this toddler was climbing the walls!  She was dancing, she was running.  It was like she was on crack.  She opened the door and took off running down the hall.  The doctor came in and reaffirmed what the triage said.  "She is fine, lungs sound good".  "She probably just has a little cold."  We signed the discharge papers and we were outta there.....3 hours later.

I am still shaking my head at this afternoon's events but I am very relieved that there is nothing wrong with her.  I really do not get rattled too easily but today I was a little freaked out.

I am having one right now.  Lite beer of course.

(Days 7 and 8 Shred are DONE DONE DONE!)

Three Things Thursday

1.  I just completed my 6th day in a row of Jillian Michaels Shred.  I still get queasy going from the cardio to the ab workout.  Does anyone else have this problem or am I just that out of shape???  Also, my knees are really feeling it and I have had do the modified version of lunges and squats.  I will complete this 30 day stretch, however, I will not sacrafice a knee.  I am OK with doing the modifications.  I still wake up sore in the morning so it must mean I worked hard.

2.  Scale hop was really showed a 3lb loss since Saturday.  I have opted to counting calories rather than points and doing well sticking to my range (1500-1800).  I do think it is a little funny that I start losing weight AFTER I quit Weight Watchers.  I know, I have issues.  ha!

3.  As we are rolling into another weekend, I am so happy to see more blanks on the calendar.  Have I become a boring person?  Maybe.  But I am sure enjoying not having a million things to do.  I have simplified my schedule so much that I am able to actually RELAX during a weekend.  Imagine that!  I also just realized that I have a three day weekend because our office is closed on Monday.  WOOT!!!

Taco Soup

Here I go with the cooking again, but this time it was because a few people were looking for the Taco Soup recipe.  I am not sure who to give props to for this recipe because it certainly was not created in the Chubby Chick's Culinary Lab.

Taco Soup
2 cans or 1 box of fat free broth (I used beef)
1 packet of low sodium taco seasoning
1 small onion
1 can of fat-free refried beans
1 can of black beans drained and rinsed
1 can of kidney beans (or other kind) drained and rinsed
1 can of Rotel (you pick the how spicey to go)
1 can of corn

saute onion with a little cooking spray (I cheated and used a little butter), add broth and seasoning.  Wisk in refried beans, add all other ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes. have soup!  Enjoy.

I just completed day 4 of Shred.  Yay me...but my body still shakes when I am done.  I have to say, my biggest fear would be to have to complete a workout with Jillian Michaels in person.  I can't imagine.

I was hoping to get the workout done before headind to the office this morning, but I chose to sleep longer instead. I could not sleep last night and was more than lethargic this morning so a few more Z's felt good.  Doing Shred at night isn't bad but I hate that gnawing feeling that I still have to do something at the end of a long day.   All that matters is that it is done!

Amish Friendship Bread

No, I have not been abducted by aliens and this certainly isn't turning into a cooking blog. The thought of that makes me roll on the floor and giggle.

About 10 days ago, my friend Uncle Larry (no relation, and not a man), gave me a gallon size Ziploc bag of goo with a date on it.  With a smile and a straight face she told me it was "Amish Friendship Bread" and it was DELICIOUS!  She then forwarded me instructions that went something like this:
  • Days 1-7 mush the bag
  • Day 7 add flour, sugar, and milk
  • Day 8-9 mush the bag
  • Day 10-bake it and make mini-starters for all your friends

When she first started talking about this stuff I thought she had to be joking.  I just got done reading Bless Your Heart, Tramp by Celia Rivenbark and she had an essay dedicated to this very subject (very funny book, I recommend it).  I thought maybe she read the same thing I did and was poking fun at the people that brought in the bags of goo to share with the office.  Nope.  She really makes it and now she was sharing it with me.

For the last 10 days I have paid more attention to this bag of goo than I have my own children.  I have mushed, I have mixed, and I have finally baked.   I really tried hard not to be skeeved out that the bag did not need to be chilled.  The stuff eventually took over my kitchen.

The smell was intoxicating.  I was finally getting excited to see what all the hoopla was about with this stuff.  Maybe, just maybe all of this work would payoff to make a foodgasm-worthy bread.

It came time to pull it out of the oven and it looked like a dirty diaper.  It was baked around the edges but the middle was all liquid.  It flopped.  I baked the thing 30 minutes longer than the recipe called and it still wasn't done.  That is when I hung up my apron and called it quits.

Friendship bread my ass!  Tomorrow I am marching into her office and ask her why she hates me (because why would you do that to a friend???!!).  Then I am going to distribute my own bags of goo**evil laugh**

Oh yeah....before I forget....I did Shred this morning.  Day 3 is D-O-N-E!  Tomorrow should be interesting because will have to cross it off the list around 4:30AM and I have committed to a date with the gym over lunch.

Weekend Wrap-up, Martha Stewart Ain't Got Nothin' On Me!

Winter really needs to go fast this year.  When I am stuck in the house I do crazy things.   I actually BAKED today. I don't bake. Ever.

I was on a purging rampage this weekend and as I cleaned out my cupboards and freezer, I discovered that I had everything I needed to make banana bread.  The oven actually got used for more than just making frozen pizza.  From what I hear, it turned out really well.  My kids scarfed down half a loaf in no time at all.  Too bad I can't even test the stuff because it could kill me. I am deathly allergic to bananas. It bums me out because I used to love bananas before I reacted to them.

I also whipped up a batch of taco soup for my lunches this week.  It is pretty tasty although I am planning on renaming it colon blow soup because with 3 cans of beans there is no lack of fiber.

I am patting myself on the back for all the domestic stuff I got done this weekend.  Cooking, baking, cleaning, and we can see the floor in the laundry room (that never happens).  It was a productive weekend.  This list making is really working out well for me.

Day 2 Shred was a success.  I am so sore I can hardly type, but I did it.  Only 28 more days to go.  It is going to be challenging this week doing it before work at 4:30 AM.  I can always do it after work but I really do not like working out after 8PM and that is when I would have to do it.

Day 1 Down, 29 To Go

Today was one of those days where it is perfectly acceptable to stay in PJs all day long. I didn't have anywhere to go and my desire to leave the house was really low because of the cool temps. I need to take advantage of these lazy weekends because it is a rare thing not to have anything on the calendar.

I spent my day going through our file cabinet and organizing papers. This is a job that has been neglected for years and it took me all day to get some semblance of order. I already feel calmer without the mountains of paper. I have been really good about dealing with the new stuff that comes into the house, it was the old stuff giving me a headache. Staying busy doing that task also kept me out of the kitchen.

As the afternoon rolled into the evening we had a great dinner (tacos, a family favorite) and we played a board game with the kids. It was a great evening but I had this nagging issue that needed to be dealt with. Jillian.

After the kiddos were in bed (8PM) I plugged Shred into the DVD player and yelled up to Chubby Hubby that we had to cross this off of our list. After some whining from the both of us, we sucked it up and did it. At 8:30 at night.

We typically do not workout together. One of us is always making fun of the other.

Me: Are you doing GIRL push-ups?
CH: YUP, but at least I am doing them (he got me there, *sigh*)

We are that immature couple that are always slinging insults at the other to show affection. We ended up laughing the whole time while quoting Jillian. Chubby Hubby said I talk too much and he prefers not working out with me. Me? Talk too much???!!

The point is we did it. We set a challenge and we are going to meet it no matter what it takes. Although, at one point today I thought we had an out. The DVD player crapped out on us and completely quit working. Chubby Hubby ran to Target for a few things and came back with a new DVD player (on sale for $20. What a deal!). So...One Shred workout down, only 29 to go.

Friday, January 8, 2010

It is time for my annual piss and moan fest about how freaking cold it is here.   I don't think I am going to be getting any sympathy considering it is cold EVERYWHERE (Ummm 30 degrees in Florida???)!  It is too damn cold to do anything outside.  Seriously?  Where is this Global Warming????!!!!

When the temps take a nose dive like this, so does my motivation.    Cold weather and lack of motivation makes is really really hard to want to do anything more active than laying on the couch with a blanket.  It is a crying shame that being lazy is not part of my 2010 goals and part of the plan is going to require me to fight through this Winter lethargy.

Chubby Hubby and I have set up our first  challenge for ourselves to kick off the New Year and get us back into the routine of exercise.  We have committed to 30 days of She-Devil Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred.  It is a lofty goal but completely within our reach.  Twenty minutes a day is something we both have and the only requirement is that we get it done before turning in for the night.  Game on starting tomorrow!!!

Today was Sarge's last day in our department until she returns from deployment.  **sniff sniff** I blubbered as I walked to my car this afternoon.  (FYI, crying in sub-zero temps is not a good thing....frozen tears sting like hell)  I felt like a total moron for the waterworks display.   It is not like I won't be in contact with her and it is not like she is never coming back (prayers please).  What can I say....I am a total sap.  I am going to miss her. Prior to saying our temporary good-byes, we vowed that there would be a race upon her return.  She'll train there and I will train here.  Thankfully I have a lot of time to build a base start running again.

On a side note, it is Friday night and I am making lists.  This is one of those moments that make me shake my head and wonder how I got to a point in my life where list making on a weekend night would be considered "fun".  It seems like the perfect weekend to clean out cupboards and make the mother of all grocery lists.  Who needs to go out with that kind of fun!

I Quit

I quit Weight Watchers today.  I started thinking about the $39.95 I pay each month and how I am not working the program.  I may as well be setting fire to forty bucks each month.  I have not found a meeting leader that provides the payment induced inspiration that I need.  I do not have a group of people that I enjoy seeing every week.  Finally, I am not working the program.  I do feel like a complete tool for paying money for so long only to be heavier than when I first jumped on the scale.  I do know the program works (if you work it) and I was hoping to have the success I did in 2006.  I didn't, so today I cut my losses.

I know this doesn't go with my 2010 goals but I am replacing Weight Watchers with cleaner eating.  I have a massive support system both at home and at work as everyone that I know is kicking it into high gear and getting fit.  I will be one of them.

I am happy to have my $39.95 back each month......there is my Italy money right there!!

I have been kind of in the dumps this week.  My work BFF, Sarge, is going on an extended leave of absence (read:  being deployed).  She is a my fellow Starbucks girl, my lunch buddy, and my all around go to gal for girly chit chat.  I am going to miss her so much.  While I am beyond proud that she is serving our country, I am pissy that I am probably going to have to start making good old Folgers coffee (selfish, I know).  Thankfully time goes by fast so she will be back crunching numbers before we know it.  Also,  the world is a lot smaller these days with email and Facebook so while we are a half a world apart, we will be in touch.   In the meantime....she has some highly coveted office supplies that are just screaming for me to take.  **evil grin**

A New Year, A New Approach

I wish everyone a Happy Healthy New Year!!!
Cheap wine,  a Snuggie, and my computer is how I spent New Year's Eve....I sure know how to P-A-R-T-Y!

It is that time of the year where I start thinking about my New Year's Resolutions.  Every year, it is the same old, same old.....Lose weight and start running.  Resolutions for me clearly do not work.  I do well for a day or two and then things start to fall apart.   That is why this year I am not making them.  I am setting lifestyle goals instead.

I know my current plan of attack is not working.  I have had a lot of time to think about the causes of my failures on the program.  Hmmmm, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups for Breakfast?  As I have mentioned in previous post, I am a stress eater.  Even wiring my mouth shut couldn't keep me from soothing my soul with high calorie goodies when things go wrong.  I need to get control of my stress and find something else to do when the pressure is on.

I have been taking mental notes of my stress eating triggers.  Some things I can't do a darn thing about (ie...traffic, weather, Real Housewives of Orange County drama), but a lot of things I CAN control.  Many of my problems stem from a lack of organization and planning.  I can think of at least 10 things in my day that could be more manageable if I just gave it 5 minutes to come up with a plan. I came up with a few ideas that could help me manage my stress and eventually get me to my ultimate goals.

Carly's 2010 and Goals
  •  Plan, Plan, Plan!- I will make a list for everything from my daily to do list to my daily to do list to grocery shopping.  I have learned the hard way too many times that I have too much going not to have some sort of plan.
  • Practice the "3 D's" when I am feeling overwhelmed.  DEEP Breaths,  DRINK some water,  DO something different.- A friend of mine gave me this gem that seems like it would work when I get overwhelmed.
  • Get reimbursed for going to the gym EVERY month.  If I am too lazy to go to the gym 8 times in a month and pass up $20 there is something really wrong with me.
  • Incorporate a  5 minute breather into a day.  I am constantly doing something and I think having a 5 minute chill to regroup will help me regroup.
  • Running-This has always been one the best ways for me to regroup.  I am a much better person when I run.  I do not have any mileage goals or PR goals, just some good old fashion endorphin therapy.
  • Continue to follow Weight Watchers and WORK THE PROGRAM!
I have this list written out in a few places so I can remind myself of the changes I would like to make.

Other Items on the 2010 To Do List
  • Get a passport.  Am I the only one that doesn't have one?
  • Set aside $10/week for my "Forty is Fabulous" Italy Trip.  I still have a few years, but it is good to start early.
  • Organize, back-up, and PRINT personal photos.  This is funny considering I do all of this all of the time for other people.
  • Organize work email inbox.  Two jobs with two very big work loads = CHAOS!!!!
  • Potty Train and De-Pacifier Baby Diva-Yes, she is a 2.5 year old with a Nuk.  I stopped caring about that after 2 judging please.
  • Read 6 books-I am using books as mine unwind time but I am a very slllloooooow reader.
  • Donate and sell all unused/outgrown items- Ha...already started as I have been a de-cluttering maniac!!
  • Spend more quality fun time with the family.-Cabin fever is already starting to set in.

I have a good feeling about 2010, I think it is going to be a great year!  I have a lot of work to do so  I had better get started.  I hope want to revisit this post at the end of December with a lot of things crossed off this list.

Happy New Year!
