Weekend Wrap-Up, Weekend of Gluttony

In a previous post, I mentioned that I was going to be giving up sugar.  I am.  I really am.  I was just waiting for the perfect time.  Then I went to Target......and.....the Easter candy is out!!!

Dammit.  Dammit. Dammit.
Tomorrow starts a new month and a new week.  I am biting the bullet (and having the animal traquilizers ready) because March 1st will start my journey of cutting out the sugar.  Since today is the last day of February, I went CRAZY.  Donuts for breakfast and a quick trip to Target for this bad boy....
The cashier asked if I wanted to keep it out of the bag for the ride home.  I did what every honest lady does, I said, "Nah, put it in the bag, it is for the kids".  I was even slightly offended that he would even suggest that I could not wait to get home before scarfing chocolate down.  I got to the car and of course I couldn't wait.  YUM!!!  I am happy, I got my Reese's Egg(s) for the season.  Now I can move on.

The weekend was kind of a lazy one.  I had a mile long to do list but I lacked the motivation to tackle it.  At least it wasn't anything too important, just housework.  We were all going a little stir crazy so we  thought it would be a great idea to go out to dinner as a family.  We don't go out often because, well, the photo speaks for itself......

I think it will be a few more years before we are welcome in any restaurant.

Oh yeah...I did run this weekend (2.8 miles on Saturday).

Friday's Thoughts:

  • This is one week that I am glad is behind me!  Work.  Work.  Work.
  • I was a complete pile this whole week with the exception of a Wednesday night Pilates class.  The delayed muscle soreness has hit hard today.
  •  I ate crappy all week, hence I feel crappy today.
  • This is turning into a negative thought post....I must start using what I learned in The Secret (ha!)
  • After this craptastic week, I got a major mood lifter....I am a blonde again!  Hello Springtime hair! You can't really tell from the photo, but I am much blonder than I was.....

On to the weekend!
I am looking forward to:
  • Finishing a book
  • Enjoying the nice weather
  • Running outside
  • Letting Jillian Michaels back into my house
  • Not working
  • Taking some photos
TGIF Everyone.  Have a great weekend.

Three Things Thursday

1.  Yesterday for lunch, I had two low carb tortillas with hummus and veggies.  Later, I made myself a sandwich for dinner.  The low carb tortillas contain 11 grams of dietary fiber EACH and the bread I used for my sandwich was a DOUBLE fiber variety.  My public service announcement for today is that it is not a good idea to eat that much fiber before Pilates.  Just sayin'.

2.  My next challenge in life is going to be weaning the sugar out of my diet.  Chubby Hubby called for an intervention last night when I marched in to the living room with a bowl a hearty tablespoon (or three) of peanut butter and chocolate chips.  I was absolutely desperate for something sweet and this was even AFTER I had stole one of the kids pudding snack packs.  I have said it before, and I will say it again.....sugar is my drug.  Now that I have been called out on how low I will go to get a fix, I think it is time that I do something about it.

3.  I really hate that I am getting my hopes up to get into Grandma's Half Marathon.  I have no control over who gets in and who does not.  I really would like to have that on the calendar to have something fun to look forward to doing.  I will know hopefully by Monday or Tuesday if I am into the race.  **crossing fingers**  It is bound to happen one of these years.

Oh....Ok so this is going to be "4 Things Thursday"

4.  Upon canceling my gym membership, I realized that I can still use the facility on an "as needed" basis.  It is a small fee for the day and if I choose to use it, I am still not wasting money each month.  Thank you Missy for that reminder.

Goodbye Gym

Decisions, Decisions.

I have weighed the pros and cons of my gym membership and I have come to the conclusion that I am giving it up.  Why?
  • I am not meeting my 8 time minimum visit requirement to get reimbursed the $20
  • My 20 minute workout is more of a hassle than what I get out of it
  • Lack of machines because of constant crowds
  • Classes have additional fees and are not convenient
  • Lunch is the only time I have available to use this gym
  • I have better things to do with my $31.74 that I am spending on this each month
  • I can't stand working out on a machine next to other sweaty people (someone else's sweat splattered me....gag)
I am not giving up working out.  I have decided to expand my workout DVD library, continue with Shred, and take individual classes (like Pilates).   Now that the weather is getting nicer, I am able to run outside.  I have never been a treadmill lover and I avoid them at all costs.

I Stopped Myself

I REALLY could have used a run tonight.  I did actually get bundled up and went out the door.  I made it about 15 steps before I made the excutive decision not to risk my life or put on a show of my ass in the air for the neighbors.  The roads were very slick and in my 15 steps, I did not have a solid footing on the ground.  Perhaps ice skates would have been a better option.  These warmer winter days are great....that is until dusk arrives and starts freezing all the puddles.

Instead, I spent the night in with my family.  The Diva and I danced to some of the new tunes I downloaded (I ***heart*** Lady Gaga!!), read books with the boys, and got my Jack Bauer fix. You know what that means.....gym bag is packed for tomorrow.

Weekend Wrap-Up-A Book Review and a Secret

The last few weeks have been brutal at work and I am mentally exhausted.  I need to take a minute and just whine about work.  Work has been killer and the paperwork mountains keep building.  Don't get me wrong, I love that I have a job and I am very grateful to be employed but I am not gonna lie, office life is getting to me.  You know the old saying, "Shit rolls downhill" and I am at the bottom.  The only thing I can do is take deep breaths and keep plugging a long.  Thankfully, I had a great weekend with not much on the calendar recharge a bit.

This past weekend I read The Secret.  I have heard people talk about it, It has shown up on TV, and even Samantha in Sex in the City used it as a beach read.  I hate being left out of the loop, so I picked up this book from the library to see what all the hype has been about.  I am not much of a reader, but I do have to pick up books from time to time, that are hot "pop culture" reads just because sometimes I like following the herd (also getting reading to get my Twilight on).

I did a lot of eye rolling throughout the book.  If you haven't read it, it about the Law of Attraction.  Basically, my dumbed down version is if you think positive thoughts, you attract like things.  If you think negative thoughts, you are inviting negative things into your life.   I am sure there is more to it, but the book kept repeating the same thing over and over so I ended up reading the chapter summaries.

I didn't find the idea very earth shattering because most people already know that thoughts are powerful things and eventually become our actions.  I was expecting more of a REAL secret.  ha!
With that said, the book wasn't a complete waste of time, it is a good reminder that negative thoughts can end up being self-fulfilling prophecy that will sabotage any success.  The one part of the book that I am going to apply is visualize myself at my goal weight and live as though I am already there (I kind of am doing that already, but I need more practice).

And now for my very own "Secret".....

I signed up for Grandma's Half Marathon.  Actually, I entered my name to be in the lottery.  I am sure I am going to get in because I visualized myself getting the acceptance email (a book technique from The Secret, ha!).   I know I said, NO MORE RACES.  But I am glutton for punishment and slightly insane.  I need to do this because I cut out everything that was keeping me insanely busy.  Now I need to do this for myself and have a fun goal to work towards.

Off and Running.......

Three Things Thursday

My shoulders have hit the breaking point with these Jillian workouts.  Last night I woke up at 2AM in really bad pain.  So much pain that I had to pop a few Advil.  I avoid taking Advil at all costs because it hurts my stomach.  I do think it was a really bad idea to do Shred after Pilates.  I am thinking it might be time for a day of rest.

2.   I have been doing double tracking of calories.  While this might seem a bit OCD, it is really keeping me honest.  I feel like I am in control when I actually have to write something down.  I have also been tracking my food and exercise online with Spark People.  I like the online tracking because I like all the graphs and reports they produce.  I was using Fit Day and liked that site too but found it to be too much.  I am still not 100% happy either of  online trackers but will continue to use Spark People until I find one I like.  Any suggestions?

3.  I am very excited because we have a whole team of people from my office running the Get in Gear 5K on April 24.  Eleven people are running to be exact.  We have a wide spectrum of runners/walker that will be doing this race.  Some are first time runners, and some are seasoned runners.  We all have made some sort of a commitment to better health and this seemed like a great goal for all of us to pursue.  Some were excited right away at the idea of running a race, others needed  a bit more convincing (alcohol). It will be fun to train and see us all progress to tackle the 5K.

Wacky Wednesday

Just for a mid-week chuckle:
My son really loves to draw and make little projects.  He made this picture of a rocket in space for me to take to the office and hang it up with pride.  While I love ALL of his work,I think I will be keeping this one at home.

Ahhhh, gotta love my maturity level.
I am excited today because:
  • I get off work early
  • It is sunny outside
  • I am 33 days into Shred
  • Pilates tonight with BFF
  • I registered for a 5K!
That is right....I signed up for my first race of the season!  I am starting to get my running mojo back.

Weekend Wrap-Up, I am Shredded!

I am "Shredded".

Thank you Ms. Jillian Michaels.  I have survived your 30 day program.

After 30 days, there have been some very noticeable changes:
  • My legs are looking more toned
  • My arms jiggle a lot less
  • My face is not as round
  • My midsection has come in a bit
  • I am way more flexible
  • I have been in a better mood
Unfortunately, I did not take my measurements.  It would have been really fun to see how many inches disappeared.  As far as weight, I am still around 3-5lbs down.  I didn't lose the 20lbs as indicated on the DVD cover but I am not disapointed with the results.

I loved this program because it was a quick, down and dirty, get it done workout.  This fit into my crazy schedule because it is only 20(some) minutes.  It was one I could do while I entertained the kids (52 pick-up anyone?) and one I could squeeze in after work.

Aside from being a pretty intense workout, I only really had one major complaint.  My knees, ankles, and shins really took a beating.  I think it was the combination of working out of a hard floor and wearing my running shoes.  I think they were too rigid for me during this workout.  I have a motion control shoe and felt that my shoes were like cement bricks doing some of the moves.  I am going to buy myself a pair of cross-trainers for non-running workouts.

I completed all three levels multiple times.  I did spend most of my time in level one primarily because I felt like I got the best workout during that segment.  Level 2 and 3 were good but some of the moves were too hard for this out of shape girl and caused pain that was above and beyond a "good hurt".  As I got stronger, I would combine the levels to make the workout a little more challenging.

Now what?

Well, I am not sure what to do next.  People have said their record for consecutive days with Shred has been 40+ days.  I have to admit, my competitive edge is starting to come out and I would like to crush those records.  I may push on and keep doing it.  Really, the snow is not going anywhere anytime soon (as I type we are getting 6-12"!).  It is a good way to get a decent quick workout in for the day.  We will see....I am not sure how much more Jillian speak I can handle.

All in all, I do think this is a great DVD for the workout library.

Where Did the Week Go?

I can't believe it is Thursday night already.  It has been one of those weeks were it feels like I am a machine.  Work.  Eat. Shred. Sleep.  Repeat.  Work has been insane.  I am doing the best I can, but I am swamped and quite honestly a bit a lot overwhelmed.  I guess I can call my work load job security.

Good friends and Chipotle is the best stress buster.  I haven't been able to make it to the gym all week and today I chose to do lunch with my friend rather than workout.  It was good decision because I needed the break.  Laughter really is the best medicine as we laughed so hard our stomachs hurt. I know people around us must have thought we were high because of our middle school maturity level.

I have been struggling with making decent food choices.  I am due for a trip to the grocery store.  Because the food supply at home is dwindling, I am getting lazy and I have been eating on the run.  It is painful to see how fast those convenience calories add up when you record them.  The good news is that I am recording my food intake and I have made some shocking discoveries this week.  Did you know that each peanut M&M is 11.9 calories (I counted the individual pieces, 250 caloried/21 M&Ms) and Starbucks Iced Lemon Pound cake is around 500 calories!!!  I think I will pass on those items in the future.  Neither one was worth it.

Though I have had a rough week, my workouts have been great.  I completed day #27 of Shred this evening and I have not missed a day.  Yesterday I did the double duty of Shred and Pilates back to back.  That was really tough because both workouts hit the core muscles pretty hard.  It made for a very sore morning!

This weekend there is minimal stuff on the calendar.  I am looking forward to hanging out with the kids and being done with this Shred business!!!!

Weekend Wrap-Up

My head is spinning at the thought of January being over already!  It was a productive month for me keeping to my New Year's goals.
  • 23 consecutive days of Shred (and still going strong)
  • 7 times to the gym (missed my reward by 1 visit DAMMIT)
  • Read 3 Books (My goal for the year is 6)
  • Started my Pilates class again
  • Lost 5lbs (although the scale likes to mess with me)
To keep the momentum going, I have a few goals for Feb:
  • Run 4 times/week (Tues, Thurs, Sat, Sun)
  • Finish the 30 Shred and continue program 3 times a week
  • Challenge myself to write down everything I eat everyday for this month (I have been lazy)

It is Monday morning and my brain is still a bit foggy.  I am off to find some coffee.
