Weekend Wrap-Up, Memorial Day Weekend Lessons

  • Running at noon in the heat is not a smart idea.  A plan of running six miles can turn into 3 brutal ones.
  • Drinking Beergaritas in the afternoon makes the rest of the day's to-do list null and void.
  • Never turn down a party that has a bounce house for the children.
  • Learned that our neighborhood with no kids actually has a ton of kids....again, never turn down a party with a bounce house.
  • Backyard camping is the best....especially if you get the s'mores but not have to sleep outside (hahaha Chubby Hubby!)
  • Cussing children eventually build up a tolerance for hot sauce and even request certain ones.
  • Learned to never ever leave my Blackberry out where my brother can get his hands on it to change my Facebook status.  So, No my nipples do not hurt and no I have not learned my lesson from the last time he changed it to tell the world I had to poop.
  • Never vow to stop drinking on a holiday....peer pressure always makes me cave.
  •  I can burn 806 calories by doing the Jillian Michaels Boost Your Metabolism DVD and that I am sore in places I never knew I could be sore.
  •  Summer is not officially kicked off until you have a BBQ with good friends.
  • Stuffed jalapeno burgers are awesome even if they split when you cook them....even better when shared with friends and family.
  • That there are now 18 short little weeks between me and my marathon.  Hello schedule!!!

Three Things Thursday

1.   I am tired from being a single parent this week as Chubby Hubby was traveling again for work.  I don't mind when he travels, however, it does make it crazy to schlep the kids to their activities and to / from school while he is gone.  Right now the kids are at 3 separate locations (in 3 cities no less) and I am officially sick and tired of driving around.  Two more weeks of school and then there will only be 2 stops!!

2.  Workouts were non-existent this week (see above).  Starting Monday, a traveling Chubby Hubby excuse is not going to hold up.  I will have to find a babysitter.

3.  I made a really great family friendly meal that was quick and easy.  I shall call it skillet tacos.  I browned some lean ground beef and seasoned it.  Added black beans, corn, and salsa.  Then served with a sprinkle of cheese and some tortilla strips.  The kids went nuts for it.  It was really quick to make and it was a great make ahead meal for these time crunched nights.

Wednesday's Love List

Jenn from Be.So.Happy tagged me with the I love your Blog Award.  Ahhhh, I am honored...and blushing!  Thank you.  This was timely as I don't have much to write about running wise because I have been single parenting this week while Chubby Hubby is traveling for work (Guess who is NOT golfing this weekend?).

Here are 10 things that I love:

1.  My family and friends(they get their noses outta joint if I don't mention them first).   I love that I have 3 little people and one big one to boss around and do all the work I don't want to do that bring me such joy and give me purpose in life.

2.  Good coffee with good friends.  Starbucks on the weekdays with my work buddies, Caribou with my BFF during  the weekend.
3.  Pebble ice.  I have an annoying ice addiction and I love crunchy pebble ice.

4.  My camera.  I love taking photos.  I usually have a camera on me at all times.

5.  Running.  Really a love/hate relationship.....still a love.

6.  Chubby Hubby's Heart Stopping Popcorn.  I am currently experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

7.  My Baba's Afghans.  These blankets are crocheted by hand and weigh about forty pounds.  I can't sleep without them.  I have had the one on my bed for over 30 years and it still looks new.  I call her my "old lady sweat shop" because I keep making her make them for my kids.  ha!

8.  My Crackberry.  I am OCD about checking my email and I love that I can get it anywhere (email that is).

9.  My job.  Well the job is just a job...I neither love it nor hate it but certainly appreciate that I have it. I love my coworkers and I love the flexibility it offers. Plus the benefits aren't half bad.

10.  Everything about Summer.  Warm weather, the pool, the smell of suntan lotion, the kids' baseball games, Brats, Burgers, a cold Leinie's Summer Shandy.  Speaking of is time to get outside!

Tagged, 7 Things About Me

 Claire at Take*Two has tagged me to do 7 fact about me.  Warning:  I may be the most boring person on earth and I struggled coming up with 7 facts.

1.  I am both OCD and ADD.  There are somethings that I can't rest until I have a resolution but most of the time I am easily distracted and can't finish a project to save my life.  Yes, I have been diagnosed and yes I should be on medication. 

2.  I really hate taking medication of any variety (even vitamins) and never remember to do it.

3.  I was more on the quiet side in high school (unless you knew me) and then fully came out of my shell in college.  People do not believe me when I tell them I was shy.

4.  I want to go to Europe.  I have never been.  I would love to see where my grandparents lived as well as visit some of the most popular sites.   Hmmmmm, I still need to get that passport.

5.  I love that my kids think it is cool that I run MILES and I love it even more when they brag about it to their friends.  Their stories usually involve me WINNING a race.

6.  I LOATHE being in photos but understand how important it is to pass along the memories.  I much prefer to be behind the camera.  I have thousands and thousands of photos of my kids but only a handful of pictures with me in them.  I am trying to be better about being in photos because it doesn't look like I exist in the family.

7. I have come to terms that I need to plan EVERYTHING.  I have to write it down or it doesn't get done.  Making obsessive lists is the only thing that will keep me on task (see #1).

A Day at the Doctor

Dear Chubby Hubby,
I know that you make the worlds best popcorn with your "undisclosed" amount of butter.  I am writing to inform you that your popcorn has been banned from our home.  Yes, I said BANNED.  

The reason for this ban is because of the test results I got back from the doctor....I HAVE high Cholesterol!  I have never in my life been remotely high, so imagine my shock when the test came back at 214!  I blame you and your damned butter!!!!!  And don't think for a minute I am going to accept the "Well, you didn't have to eat it argument".  That stuff is like crack you know we are both junkies.  

Is this your way of trying to kill me?  If so, I have a whole new motivation to clean up my act.  I have a lot of years left of irritating you.

I just came back from having a routine physical.  Here was the breakdown:

The good:
My iron is completely back to normal.  Also my blood pressure is very good. and I "grew" .25 inches (thank you Pilates).  I don't have to go back for another year! 

The Bad:
My weight.  My doctor isn't worried very worried about my weight even though I do fit in the "obese" category.  I explained my frustration about the non-existent weight loss.  I listed the workouts that I do and shared my food journal with her.  She told after her review, she as impressed with the workouts but not so much the diet.  I am still consuming way too many calories and way too many carbs.  She suggested that I cut back the calories again and up my protein.  Most of the stuff I have been eating (with the exception of the popcorn) has been pretty good but there hasn't been a lot of protein.

She then added the advice of working out harder, longer, and be mindful of portion control.  She also reminded me that I am no spring chicken and I can't eat like an 18 year old even if I do a 20 mile run.  Gee least she is in the same boat. 

The Ugly:
High Cholesterol!!!!!  Now  we are into non-vanity issues.  I have never had elevated levels.  I am springing in to action to nip this in the bud and get this down to where it belongs.  I could be from having butter laden popcorn at 10PM last night (Damn you Chubby Hubby!!) or it could be that my weight is catching up with me.  Either way, I am scared straight. 

I never like going to the doctor but I really had a nice time catching up with my doctor.  She has lost a lot of weight and has a lot of the same struggles as I do.  She also has gotten into running and cycling so we had a lot to talk about.  I apologize to the patient who was after me because we bullshitted for a LONG time.

Weekend wrap up with running.
  • I did 5.05 miles on Saturday. I got caught in a thunderstorm and had my first run with negative splits and my fastest mile EVER!  Maybe there should be lighting on every run that I do.
  • Sunday was an easy 3 miler.  The humidity and heat got to me but still did it.
  • Today, will be Jillian Michaels Shred.  Too hot to run tonight (for me at least).
Tonight I say good by to Jack Bauer.  *sniff sniff*  Anyone else going to be sad for 24 to be over?

My Thoughts:
I have to be honest because I only tried one bottle.  I had an allergic reaction, I am adding cherries to my now long long list of things I cannot eat (or drink for that matter).  Of the one bottle I did try, the taste was great.  I LOVE tart and this really packed a punch. Chubby Hubby was the fill in taste tester and it was too tart for his palate.  Final verdict:  Great taste and nice benefits (if you are not allergic).

I must add that I am allergic to most of the stone family fruits and it is not Cheribundi's product that caused it.  This is one of those things that falls under the category of my own stupidity for not thinking before trying.

Three Things Thursday

1.  I went to Pilates last night and I have come to the conclusion that I am bored with it.  I made the decision not to go last night, then at the last minute I peeled out of the driveway to make it to class.  I felt guilty that I saw the instructor at the kids' school and enthusiastically said I would be there I paid for it for the class and can't stand when I waste money.  The problem is, we have been doing the exact same moves for 9 months.  It is as redundant as doing a DVD.  While it is still a great workout, I am now finding it boring.  I don't think I will be signing up again for the summer session. I may consider going back in the fall.

Instead, I think I am going to take up swimming.  I really need a refresher course or get one of my strong swimmer friends to help me.  I know how to swim, but I can't seem to coordinate my breathing with the strokes.  Every summer we get a pool pass to the "Country Club" aka community pool and this year that have added time for an adult lap swim.  I really think my marathon training muscles will appreciate this.

2.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are not my favorite days.  It is my long day at work and the boys have baseball and tee-ball back to back (or at the same time).   I am going to re-work my training schedule so these are my rest days from running.  I will be able to resume the normal schedule after baseball season ends.

3. I am struggling with what to make for dinner on these crazy activities nights.  We don't have a lot of time between picking up the kids from school and the time we have to be at the ball field (20 minutes tops).  It was just discovered that there is a pizza joint up the road where we can get pizza (albeit crappy pizza) for $5 without waiting.  Knowing myself all too well...this pizza joint or the McDonald's drive through will become a really bad habit really fast.  Does anyone have a great grab and go options that is better than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (which is totally fine but it gets old fast)?  Tonight we are having left over pizza (again)...LOL

Lucky 13

Yesterday Chubby Hubby and I celebrated 13 years of marital bliss.  We didn't get wild and crazy, in fact I didn't even go to Target and read him an anniversary card this year (yes, I am that cheap).   My brother offered to babysit the rugrats so we could enjoy a dinner out.  Our big plan was to try this new place (well new to us) not too far from our house.  We had heard great things about it and thought our anniversary was a swell enough occasion to go.

We went.  And....

The short story:
We ended up walking out of the joint.

The long story:
We walked and and two hostesses greeted us with the most unenthusiastic looks on their faces, no hello, no smile.  We felt as though we had just caused a major imposition on them.  They just barked off the waiting times for both indoor and outdoor seating.  That should have been our indication to leave.  Then we walked into the bar to wait for a table, I couldn't flag the bartender down for a drink if I was flashing my boobs.  Our pager buzzed and we were seated after about 15 minutes.  Again, we waited.  Our server came and took drink orders and then disappeared.  Another fifteen minutes later, we flagged her down and then she started venting about the other staff....but we still had no drinks! But.....she brought us water.  Finally we got up and left after half an hour of frustration. What does a girl have to do to get a beer???

We ventured to Pub close to our house where we had a lovely dinner, had great service, and ended up having a really nice time (and the best fried pickles I have ever had!!!)   I realized this morning that the Pub's name was "Luckys 13".  It was a nice place to celebrate our "lucky 13th" wedding anniversary.  (insert awwwwwww here)

This experience got me thinking about when customer service goes south. Chubby Hubby and I have very different approaches (like our personalities).  He quietly leaves with the satisfaction of not giving them his business.  I on the hand, feel I need to let them tactfully know what did not meet my expectations.

In the end, we had a really fun time (after the first place) and we came home and watched 24.  We are crazy!

The Ultimate Runner-The Review

When I first started my blog, one of the first blogs I followed (and still do) was the Runners' Lounge Blog.
I love all the topics and the members range from brand-spanking new weekend warriors to seasoned ultra marathoners.  When I heard that Tom Green and Amy Hunold-VanGundy had published a book, was really excited to read it.

The book is a great mix of real runner stories and tips from the experts.  The stories run the gamut of why and how people find it within themselves to lace up their shoes and pound the pavement.  The stories are entertaining and motivational.

The expert advice was great and covered most of the hot topics.  Owning a lot of running books, the expert advice was a bit of a refresher for me.  It was all stuff that I had read before, nevertheless, it was a good reminder.....especially the topic of injuries.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.  The stories both made me laugh and made me tear up.  I even recognized a couple of  fellow bloggers that I follow on a regular basis who had shared their stories.  If you are looking for a good summer read or perhaps a gift for a loved on that is a runner, this gets a Chubby Chick two thumbs up.  I think if you are a runner of any type, you will enjoy this book.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Friday night I was reading over my marathon training plan and I started freaking out.  There are only 21 weeks until the marathon!!!!  Life kind of got in the way for the last few weeks between sickness and family life, unfortunately running took a backseat.  The only thing that was going through my mind was how far behind I was in training.  The way I am approaching this marathon is a bit unorthodox.  Couch to marathon anyone?  Taking any time off is putting this race at risk.

Long story short, I quit fretting and got off my ass.  I told myself I was going to run as far as my legs would carry me and I would use that mileage as my "longest long run".  So, Saturday morning I set out to run and thought my legs would only be capable of doing 2 miles.  To my surprise, I was able to complete 4.4 miles without too much pain.  I immediately thought it was a fluke because I had taken allergy meds and advil prior to heading out the door.  There was no way I thought I could replicate that run.  I was wrong, this morning I hit the roads again and completed another 4 miles.  I guess the moral of the story is you never know how a run is going to be until you get out there. 

I am happy to say, I am not freaking out about training anymore.  I still have a few weeks before my official training program starts.  My first week's long run is 6 miles.  I will be good to go.  *knocking on wood*

It was a great weekend to be outside.  The rain finally stopped and the sun made an appearance.  I hope the weather stays around for a bit.

Thankful Thursday

I stole this idea from Jen's blog and since I might be a good idea to focus on the good things today.  Maybe it will break my funky mood.

10 Things I am Thankful for Today

1.  My Brother-  He came to help me out last night.  I had the
mother of all migraines last night and ended up puking my guts out most of the evening.  Of course I had to get sick while being a single parent.  Chubby Hubby is on a business trip.  I called my brother to see if he could come over because I could not function let alone take care of 3 kids.  He dropped everything and brought an arsenal of stuff to make me feel better.  He put my kids
to bed AND cleaned up my kitchen after my half-assed attempt to make dinner.  Not only did he run the show....he stayed away from my open Facebook account on my computer.  (he ALWAYS changes my status to say something about poop).

2.  My kids- They were angels last night when I was sick.  The TV bribe worked.  I told them if they were good, I would let them watch TV until bedtime.  Diva watched 3 hours of Dora the Explorer.  The boys hunkered down in the basement watching some Disney shows.  There was no whining, no complaining, and they were QUIET.  I didn't win any Mother of the Year awards but they were happy and didn't mind that I was not entertaining them.

3.  Dora the Explorer- Even though Dora annoys me more than anything (Swiper no Swiping), she got Diva to sit for more than
30 seconds.

???!!!!  They looked like dancing toys of the adult variety....Freaky.

4.  Puking-I hit 10lbs lost this morning.  Please don't burst my bubble telling me that I will gain it back when I drink a glass of water.  Seeing 10lbs made my day.

5.  Crappy Overpriced Soup-  I am thankful for this because I will save $6 by never eating this crap again.  I think it is the first meal in my life that I didn't finish.  It is a great reminder to bring my lunch.

6.  Game Rain Outs-   I hate it that my kids can't play baseball/teeball tonight, however, they have games at the same time tonight at different fields.  It is kind of a nightmare to be in two places at once.  Luckily have have a lot of friends to take one of the kids to the game, but they both want me at their game.  The rain solves this problem.

7.  BioFreeze- My aching foot loves this stuff.  (saying prayers that my date will Jillian didn't cause real damage)

8.  My Crocs-  They might be ugly, but I love my orange Mary-Janes!  they are sooooo comfy and better yet, I can wear them to work.  Don't judge me. 

9.  Fleece jackets- It is May and it is in the 40's and 50's.  I am glad I didn't put away my trusty fleece jackets.  It is COLD.  Rumor has it, that it is supposed to be 80 next week.  I will believe it when I see it.

10.  Today- Chubby Hubby comes home tonight.  Thank the Sweet Baby Jesus!!!!

Hump Day

Thanks for all the great comments yesterday concerning the conversation with my co-worker (aka Asshat).  Like I said, her words were not offensive to me because she is truly is kind of a moron.  I do find it funny that the people with the most opinions on running, usually aren't runners.

Anyone a Biggest Loser fan?  I am not a huge fan of the show primarily because all crying bugs me, but most of all, I save my TV watching for Jack Bauer Mondays (I will be so sad when the show is canceled).  I did not watch it last night.  Chubby Hubby, who is a fan, Tivo-ed the ending for me to watch before work this morning.  I learned that the contestant Sunshine was from my community and they showed several clips our 'hood.  It was kind of cool to see familiar spots on TV.   I don't know what kind of  person she was on the show, but she looks AMAZING!  Her before and after photos were great.   I loved her homecoming celebration.....even the mayor statue welcomed her home.

This mayor statue gets "dressed" all the time.  Any given day he has some sort of costume on. 
I was glad that he was part of her homecoming.
 Yet another gray day

I am really tired of all of this rain.  This weather is making me feel lethargic.  Everything has been so gray and blah for the last week.  I am begging Mother Nature to send us some sun!!!  Friday can't come soon enough!

A Case of the Mondays

The following conversation took place in my office today between myself and a co-worker (actually one of the bosses around the joint).  I shall refer to the co-worker as "Asshat".

Asshat:  I heard you were running a marathon.
Me:  Yes, in October
Asshat:  Wow, that is really incredible.  How is the "practice" going (she used the term practice)
Me:  Great.  I don't OFFICALLY start for another couple of weeks.
Asshat:  You must really like to run.  How long have you been running?
Me:  Yeah...I have been a runner most of my life.
Asshat:  ***looking me over*** It must have been a lot easier when you were younger and thinner.
Me:  ***stare***
Asshat:  Maybe doing this "practice" will slim you down a lot.
Me:  ***stare and getting ready to throw hot coffee at her***

I am not offended and I didn't rip her head off because she is one of those people that only hears herself talk.  It would have been a wasted breath on my part.  On the other hand, it is nice because she is someone you can insult openly and it goes right over her head.  I am just waiting for the next staff meeting to plot my revenge.  Kidding of course and in her defense she said she could never in her wildest dream run a mile let alone a marathon. 

Hearing this today and adding this to the snide comment I heard at the Get in Gear 5K about how just ANYBODY can call themselves runners these days kind of got my undies in a wad.  I would just like to take a moment and get on my soap box to say, runners come in all shapes and sizes.  If you are a runner, you will absolutely know that not everyone can run.  I am sick of the following comments:

  • I have a friend that is a REAL runner.  You know....(implying that they are shaped like a runner or faster or run longer distances)
  • You just don't have a runner's body (not many people do)
  • I can WALK faster than that (referring to the slow but steady pace)
The list could go on and on...I could get annoyed, but I don't.  I just sit back and smile I might be a little chubby, but I am tough enough to go the distance.

I will step off my soap box now.  What are some of the annoying comments that you get from non-runners?

Weekend Wrap-Up, Mother's Day

This past week was kind of a wash as far as running goes.  I made a really really dumb move doing the Jillian Michaels DVD barefoot on my hard basement floor and I think I screwed a few muscles up in my foot.  I ran on Tuesday night and that was it.  The rest of the week was just walking, pilates, and icing my foot.  I really need to invest in a pair of cross-trainer shoes because my old stability shoes just don't cut it doing these other workouts.  After a few days of inactivity the foot is feeling better.

It ended up being a great week to take it easy because the baseball games have started, the kids were sick, my friend had a baby, and the weather was shitty.  We had snow in May.  Snow.  If we didn't love our family and friends so much, we would have a for sale sign up in the front yard and we would be headed south!!!!  Tuesday when I did run, I ran in a tank top and shorts and by Thursday I was looking for my winter jacket.  These photos were taken on our way up to Duluth.  Ugh.....depressing.  At least it is gone now.

When we got to Duluth, we celebrated Chubby Hubby's birthday!  He got the Shake Weight.

It was the subject of sick jokes and hours of entertainment for the whole family.  At least I can say it works.  Man, my arms and chest are really sore!

Mother's Day was wonderful!  Chubby Hubby, my dad, and my brother waited on my mom and I hand and foot.  We woke up and spent the morning in the hot tub with mimosas and then had a fabulous home-cooked brunch.  I am in a food and drink coma, but it was worth it.

A couple of quick snapshots of some of two of my favorite ladies, my mom and my Baba (grandma).  Baba was looking through my photos on the camera and said " look really chubby, I didn't recognize you".   Ahhhh......thanks.  Gotta love it.

Last night when we came home from our trip, I sat down and wrote out a detailed schedule for the week.   Chubby Hubby is going to be traveling soon and I will need to be uber-organized (not my strong suit).  I was able to schedule my workouts but if I miss these scheduled opportunites I am out of luck so that is a little more motivation to just get them done.

Weekend Wrap-Up-A Trip Down Memory Lane

This photo project I decided to take on is WAY bigger than I thought.   Thankfully, I have some pretty sweet software to speed up the organization.  However,  I didn't get very far on Saturday night because I kept looking at photos in disbelief wondering how time can go so fast.  I am currently working on the year 2005 and I came across a this photo of my boys at ages 1 and 3.  They are now almost 6 and almost 8!!!
And I can't forget Diva, hard to believe that she is almost 3!

As I was organizing some other photo stuff today, I also came across this:

A long time ago I had started putting a quasi-scrapbook together of all the races I have done.  I had photos and my bibs from the races as well as a mini race report (ancient blogging).  I was really fun to look back on those stories.  I have a few more to add to the book!  The photo above was my first race ever, Twin Cities Marathon in 2001.  Seeing this and reading my recap made me really excited for my summer of training (I will re-read this sentence come August).

Aside from sitting by the computer today looking at photos, I really didn't accomplish anything.  Chubby Hubby and I took the kiddos to the park this morning and did a very short walk.   That was it.  I didn't have much in the tank as far as energy goes so I chalked it up to a rest day.  Tomorrow morning I have a date with Jillian!

Saturday Night

I am one wild and crazy lady tonight.....I am organizing five years of photos.  I REALLY need to practice what I preach about photo organization.  I need to label them properly, print, and back them up.  The photos I have done for my clients uber organized while my personal photos are in the equivilent of a computer version of a shoe box.  To make matters worse I have THOUSANDS of photos.  This project is WAY bigger than I had anticipated. makes for an exciting Saturday night.

I am pretty excited to report than I ran 4.1 miles today and it was a great run! I found every excuse not to run right away in the morning.  I finally got off my rear about 11AM and got it done.  I was concerned that this run would be like my last few where I could not hardly make it through the first mile.  That was not the case and I felt great the whole time.  My goal is to be able to run 6 miles by the end of the month.  If I can keep this up, it should not be a problem.

I was surprised the run went as well as it did because I woke up this morning feeling like I got hit by a truck.  The morning after Jillian's Boost Your Metabolism was awful.  My arms are still achy and sore.  It was a great workout.  I am going to shoot to do that bad boy at least 2 times a week.

Back to my project from HELL!  PSA:  Take time to organize and back up or digital photos or you will someday be a weekend lame ass like me.
