Back to Reality (Almost)

Last night was our last night of kid freedom.  Tonight we head north to get them and our jobs as parents will resume.  To be honest, I am missing them a lot.  To be really honest, I cherished every moment they were gone.  The week flew by for us but it was great to have such a nice break.  Thanks Mom and Dad!

We went out more this week than we have in the last 6 months.  We usually are too cheap to pay a babysitter $10-15 bucks an hour to watch our children that are usually in bed.  We normally really enjoy hanging out at home.  This week we tried new a couple newrestaurants and visited a fav, hung out with good friends, and played a little golf.   We did a lot of eating and drinking. It could not have had a better week, well, maybe if we didn't have to work.  We had quite a streak and I don't even want to assess the caloric damage.  All I am saying is my pants are a little snug today.  It was totally worth it though! 

Running this week has been rough.  I haven't been feeling great.  I have had no zip and my legs have been feeling like lead.  I went out a couple of times but didn't cover anywhere near the mileage that was scheduled.   I took a lot of walk breaks and then eventually gave up all together.  As it turned out, I got me a Summer cold.  Stuffy nose, muscle aches, and a sore throat.  Wonderful.  Chubby Hubby got it as well.  It came on yesterday.  I passed up my scheduled run last night while feeling like this but there was no way in hell I was letting a kid free night go to waste. We headed out for a beer and a burger instead.  A girl has to have her priorities.  I am chugging Airborne and resting up to get back into it.

I am looking forward to the weekend and seeing my kiddos. I am sure they have been crying the whole time because they have been so bored.  They look like they are having a horrible time!  Ha!!

Wardrobe Woes

Chubby Hubby and I are having a blast being kidless for this week.  We have been going out every night because we rarely do it when the kids are at home.  Stepping out on the town has presented some challenges....I have NOTHING to wear.  Everything I own is boring (t-shirts), worn out, or too small.   We have a very lax dress code at work so I typically wear jeans.  At home I can be found in shorts or sweatpants.  I have nothing for these occasions that I get out of the house.

We were going Downtown to have dinner at Solera and I could hardly find anything acceptable to cover my bod.  I was planning on wearing what I wore to work, a black skirt and a t-shirt.  That plan was nixed when my friend at work looked at me with a "no way in hell" kind of look on her face and proceeded to tell me I looked cute but FRUMPY.  FRUMPY!!!!  I love my honest friends (I say that after I called her a bitch)!!!  So, I desperately needed a plan B.

I dug through my closet and found white linen shirt that was rather matronly flowy, a pair of black capri pants that needed to be jacked-up because I couldn't zip them, and paired them with low heeled black slides. I topped off the outfit with my multi-functional, works with anything Lia Sophia necklace.  I pulled together something that was mediocre at best that fit into the boring category.  By stepping out in these digs, I was waiting for two things to happen:
1.  Someone to ask me when I was due.  The cut of the shirt is less than flattering and looked like a maternity shirt.

2.  Someone to say they had the same Lia Sophia necklace.  This happens every single time I go out of the house with it on.  Damned home parties!!!

Moral of the story:  I either need to get cracking and starting dropping some serious lbs or I need to go shopping and get some dang clothes that I can be seen wearing in public. 

The good news is, I am not getting any bigger.  The bad news is I am RUNNING ALL THE TIME and I am the SAME SIZE!   At least the wardrobe woes didn't stop me from having a fabulous time.

Weekend Wrap-Up...I AM FREE

My house is quiet today.  There are no chirping voices, no whining or crying, no one asking for mom or dad.  It is just quiet.  While it is a bit weird, I am enjoying it for the moment.  My parents have taken the children for the week so Chubby Hubby and I can work (no daycare this week).  Perhaps on Wednesday I will be longing for the deafening noises that my three children produce, but for the time being I am going to enjoy the serenity.

My parents live 2 hours away from us and we meet them half -way to drop off the kids.  This time we exchanged vehicles as well.  I gave them my MILF wagon and I got stuck with a new black convertable.....damn it!  Sucks to be me, I know.   After we did the drop and switch with my parents, Chubby Hubby and I jumped into the car and sped off with grins we could not wipe off our faces.  We enjoyed our afternoon by driving with the top down (the car, not mine), we hit the outlet mall, and we grabbed a drink.

As we were finishing up our onion rings and beer, Chubby Hubby got that glint in his eye and I knew I was in trouble.  He said "I think it is time for you to do something that you haven't done for a long time"...."The kids are gone so there are no excuses"...."don't make me beg".   He said the time has come and I must give in.  I had to suck it up and....

We golfed at Fort Snelling.  It is a shitty 9 hole course separated from the MSP airport by a chain link fence.  Actually, for a city course it isn't too bad.  But I do not know of too many golf courses that you can see airplanes landing while teeing off.  What I like about this place is that it is good for someone like me, a crappy golfer.

I actually had fun today with the Chubby Hubby.  We do not go out often to do stuff like and it was a treat to spend some QT with just him. I was what I needed to get over my craptastic run this morning (a 13 miler that turned into 6)  I just hope he doesn't read this and expect me to do this more often!

I have more to add about this weekend, but I have to write more later. This chick is tired and I am going to go enjoy the peace and quiet!

Impromptu Race

Last night I ran the Life Time Fitness Torchlight 5K.  It is a fun run race that kicks off the Minneapolis Aquatennial Parade.  It runs through the streets of downtown Minneaopolis, over the Stone Arch Bridge,  and finishes at St. Anthony Main.  There are THOUSANDS of people that come out on a hot July Wednesday night to do this run.  Why?

 That was a good enough reason for me to do it.  A race with free beer and live music, how could I pass that up?  I finally decided at 6PM that I was going to do this 5K.  I hauled ass downtown, parked, and walked a well over two miles to to the start of the race.  I was quite impressed that I did all that and was registered by 7:15PM.  I waited for my friends to pick up their packet and we headed for the start.

The race itself was pretty uneventful.  Since it was a fun run, I just ran for fun and didn't have any time expectations.  It was fun to people watch.  My favorite, was the group of guys that ran in skin tight cut off jean shorts...I hope they lubed up.  There was a lot of people and it was HOT.  Even at 7:30, the temp was still pretty steamy.  I love running through downtown Minneapolis.  It is quite beautiful down by the river.  We finished strong then headed over to the race after party for our free beer.  I have to say, I am glad I decided to do it.  It broke up the monotony of the week and it was a fun way to get a training run in.

I did not run today.  Rather, I am starting to pack up my children to get them ready for a week long trip to their grandparent's house.  I am GIDDY with excitement to have a kid free week I am going to miss them so much.  Also in 41 days....I will be heading to Florida for the annual Labor Day trip.  Chubby Hubby insisted that I stay until Labor Day which makes my trip 6 days long (I am slightly suspicious of why he said to "go and enjoy the trip", but right now I don't care.  There will be a beach).   Double RnR this summer!!!  I am one lucky girl!  While I am excited for the trip, I don't want to wish time away because that means summer is OVER.

Tuesday's Attention Deficit Mind Dump

I can't seem to focus today.  At all.

Thoughts occur in real time.
  • I kind of liked my gym workout last night.  Elliptical machine, 30 minutes and I sweat like a whore in church.
  • I forgot to tell middle son's teacher that he is not allowed in the pool today because of the stitches in his head. (don't ask....annual injury)
  • pool today.  They are on a field worries
  • Oh...I just got an email from Sarge.
  • She is so wise!!!  I miss her.
  • Oh My God, I am never going to transition into one job.
  • I will not worry about it right now, I have a Chipotle bowl to chow down.
  • I will have to run at least 5 miles tonight rather than the 3 I had planned to burn part of this off.
  • I have a tension headache....on day two
  • The Advil and caffeine are doing nothing.  I think I need narcotics.
  • half marathon is in 18 days.
  • OMG...I also have the kids' birthday party in 18 days.
  • Was it a good idea to plan a party for three kids on the same day that I run a half marathon?
  • Where is a paper bag?
  • It will be fine.
  • In 5 days and I kid free for a week.  Thanks mom and dad!
  • Grad School.
  • Why am I thinking about grad school?  I have enough on my plate.
  • But really grad school?  It would be a shame not to take advantage of an almost free education.
  • Oh no, it is time to go back to work already.

Weekend Wrap-Up-12 Miles

I really don't have much to wrap up for this weekend.  We had overnight company on Friday, Saturday we had another tornado warning (no damage, Thank God!), and Sunday was the long run.  Now it is time get back into planning for the week ahead.

I am starting a new roll at work tomorrow.  It is not a new position because I am actually doing the job right now.  Even though I was full-time, I was working two part-time jobs in my department.  While I loved the variety, I was losing my mind!!   I love chaos, but even this was a bit much.  A normal position opened up and I jumped on it.  I start it tomorrow.  Yay.
 I was fretting about my 12 mile.  I was only able to get out and do 4.5 miles total this past week and I didn't feel prepared.  I kept telling myself that I ran 10 miles, 12 should be no sweat.  I got up and and made my PB and J bagel and procrastinated for about 2.5 hours.  When I finally headed out, the weather was PERFECT.  It was overcast, mid 70's, and there was a nice breeze.  My 12 miles seemed to fly by and in fact I did the 12 miles as fast as I did my 10 mile run last weekend (fast being relative of course)!  It was a great run.

I did something a bit different on this run than I did for last weeks 10 miler, I brought water and shot blocks.  I learned my lesson last week that 7 miles in is way too late to have my first sip of water.  I brought a long two different types of shot blocks.  I brought a couple black cherry because they contain caffeine and I brought a couple of maragarita flavored ones (yes!!! maragarita flavor!!!!).  They contain sodium.  The combo of the two were great.  I never take as many as they say on the package.  I took one block every 30-40 minutes with water.  Worked like a charm!

Back to the Margarita Shot Blocks....They were tasty!!!!!  These will be coming with me on all of my long runs.  Go figure, I finally find some running fuel that I like and it is flavored after one of my favorite cocktails.  Ha!  Thank you REI lady for suggestion that I purchase these.

Three Things Thursday

1.  My run was postponed by Mother Nature last night.  The "feels like" temp was 101 degrees and that is way too hot for this cold blooded Minnesota girl.  I couldawouldashoulda done Shred or some other Jillian workout, but opted to hang with the family and attack my mountain of laundry instead.

2.  I signed up for a gym. Yeah, Yeah...I realize I just QUIT one gym.  I only quit because the only time I could go was at lunch and we all know those workout were not going to happen.  The new gym is right by my house, BFF has a membership, and it is UBER cheap.  They have hours that I will be able to use it.  As much as I hate running on the treadmill, it is a nice option to have when temps swing to the extremes. 

3.  I am slightly freaking out about my upcoming 12 mile run on Saturday.  It seems like a long long way and it is not even HALF of what I am going to be running in October.  I will do it and I will live to tell about it but these long runs are when my mind starts going crazy with doubt.  I kind of wish I had a running group to help get me through them. But I don't, so you guys have to listen to my whining concerns with training.

Chafing Anyone?

Every runner at some point in their journey will experience "the chafe".  For me, I refer to it as "chub rub" or  "bra burn".   The friction from clothing or skin on skin contact causes your skin to rub right off and hurt like hell.  If you have never experienced the chafe, you are either one of those skinny peeps where you can see daylight through your thighs when your legs are together or you haven't been running than longer than a week.

I was sent a free sample of Lanacane's Anti Chafing gel to try out.  I was very excited to to receive this sample as I am a chronic victim of chafing.

This is what their website is saying about the product:

These are my thoughts and observations on this product:

Please excuse the photo of the tube, Diva got her hands on it before I could take a proper photo.  This product comes in gel form and it was a really nice consistency.   It was a lot lighter than petroleum jelly and it was not greasy at all.  In fact, it had powdery feel to it once it was rubbed in.

I tested this product in a couple of situations.  The first being a day where I wore a skirt to work.  Sorry if this is TMI, but I know for a fact that I am not the only one with this problem.  Skirts and I do not mix, especially in the summer.  My thighs rub and that causes me to walk like a cowboy only after a few hours.  Before heading out, I applied a bit to the "danger zone".  I actually was quite surprised at how well it worked.  I did end up having to reapply as the day went on, but I only had to do it once.

The next situation I tested the anti chafing gel was running.  I hit all the hot spots, the bra line/strap line, heart rate monitor, and thighs.  Then I headed out for my 4 mile run.  About half way through I started feeling some friction from the my heart rate monitor strap/ bra line.  It wasn't terrible but it seemed that the original application had worn off.  I got home without bleeding, but I could tell there was some chaffing.  I did reapply to the sore area when I got home and did get immediate relief. 

I think this is a great product to keep in your purse.  It works well for day to day situations where you would need a little skin relief (It allowed me to wear a skirt!!).  However, I didn't find this product to be sweat proof enough to be able to handle long runs on hot days.  To be fair, I do not think that this product was intended for that use.  Lanacane Anti-Chafing Gel can be found at most major drug stores.

Weekend Wrap-Up, Head Games

Is it really Monday morning already?  This weekend was a BLUR.

Saturday, BFF and I had our annual garage sale.  We hung outside all all trying to purge our houses of crap we no longer need.  All of our hard work paid off in $150 in profits (for both of us).  It never is about the money.  It is a day that we are stuck with each other and we can sit and chat all day and enjoy cocktails.  Yes, we have cocktails all day.  We even rope in some of our other girlfriends to haul their crap over and hang out with us.  The people watching is usually awesome, however, we did not have story worthy things happen this time around.  We did have some fun with the stuff that we were selling.  BFF was selling her hubby's DJ mixer and microphone.  I thought I should buy it because I was having a great time entertaining our customers.  ha!

Sunday,  I had 10 miles on the schedule.   I was nervous because it was my first double digit mileage  and I missed my long run last weekend.  I got early and headed out.   I started out slow, even slower than normal.  Once I got to 2 miles I was almost ready to give up because I checked out my Garmin and I could WALK faster than I was running.  My legs were feeling like concrete and I couldn't find my groove.

Then I got a sign.  Quite literally, there was a sign that contained the word MENTAL (I have no idea what it was for, the ADD kicked in again and I only got the word MENTAL).   Ah ha!!!!  I needed to mentally train.   One of the most important things that I have learned from my last two marathons is that when you are tired, the only thing that keeps you going is the belief that you will cross the finish line.  This long run was going to train the brain.  It was all mental.  I stopped looking at the Garmin and just put one foot in front of the other.  I ran, I walked, I cussed...and each step got me closer to being done.  I finished it!

After the run, I resumed my normal motherly duties such as digging out a bead that Diva shoved up her nose.  Chubby Hubby and I did minor surgury to remove it.  Success.  Then as a family we headed out to see Toy Story 3.  It was a great movie!!!  I sobbed and sobbed!  I cried at a kids movie.  It is definately worth seeing and it will make you want to hug your kiddos.

Another great summer weekend.  Back to reality today!

Miserable 4 Miles

Today was NOT my day for running.  Both Mother Nature and the Gods of Running were out to get me.  I guess it was their way of teaching me not to take a week off of running while in the middle of a training program.  They were not going to make my comeback easy and they were going to make sure that I paid for my over indulgences.

Today was a beautiful day.  In fact, over lunch, I hit the Farmer's Market and ate my lunch outside.  It was a hot one but it was nice.  I brought my clothes with me to work so I could get a few miles in before I had to pick up the kiddos.  As I was leaving, Mother Nature opened the sky and it started raining in sheets.  She also threw in a bit of thunder and lighting.  My after work run didn't happen.

After a few more hours of rain, the skies cleared and I headed out.  Holy hell it was HUMID!  My legs felt like lead so I ended up  taking a few more walk breaks that I would have liked.   When I did feel like I was chugging along at a decent pace, the Garmin slapped me back into reality.  I was slow tonight.  Very painfuly slow.  My skin was sticky and I had a nice collection of bugs stuck to my skin.   If that wasn't bad enough I was half way through my run and my stomach started churning.  Thankfully, I gambled and WON and I didn't have to come home and explain that story to Chubby Hubby.

In the end....I accomplished 4.33 miles.  Slow, but they got done. 

What did I learn:
  • Street vendor food is maybe not a good idea to eat prior to running
  • Taking a whole week off of running during marathon training is also not a good idea
  • A late night or two takes me at least 3 days to recover
  • Humidity sucks

Weekend Wrap-Up, Independence Rocks!

The Independence Rocks party that has become an annual event at our house may "rock", but the hangover certainly does not.  Three nights of very little sleep, lots of tasty but bad for you food, and copious amounts of alcohol really took its toll on me.  I had so much fun that I forgot (ignored) that I am TRAINING FOR  A MARATHON (missed my long run)!  I am on day two of this hangover!  I made a declaration of my own yesterday that July 5th is officially Stretchy Pants and Trashy TV Day!  Today it was back to work, but my productivity was almost sub-par.  Thank you Starbucks for getting me through the day.  I won't shame myself by taking about my attempted run.

Because I am immature, childish, overly tired, and possibly drunk....I needed to post these photos of our trashy carnival.  These photos capture only some of the family friendly fun we had tonight.

Gimme a Break!
This Carnie told me his entire life story while I waiting in line for the Spinning Bear ride.  I learned that he didn't have one "mofoing break" (his words not mine) since 4:30 AM and how he makes 1/8th of minimum wage.  Then he continued the story about how he got stood up at the alter.  I didn't even make eye contact with this fella and he still had to share his drama with me.

There is nothing like having a moment with your daughter on a kiddie ride and looking out to see people being cuffed and hauled away at a carnival.

We have to go the this carnival EVERY YEAR because of how trashy it is.  It is always a good time!  I know this is not really a nice thing to do but I got some great laughs tonight.  I will see you all in hell because that is where I am going after posting this.

JULY??!!! Old Goals and New Goals

Did I miss June?  Because it FLEW by.

On April 1, I set some goals for this quarter ending 6/30/10 and they were as follows:
  • Run the Get in Gear 5K DONE
  • Continue base building for Twin Cities Marathon-DONE
  • Lose 10lbs (I hope more, but need to break it up into smaller goals)--7lbs gone but not 10lbs
  • Finally try a Kettlebell workout-NOT...but I did meet an AWESOME KB Instructor!!
  • Continue lunch time walks at least 3 times per week---This has been hit or miss. 
This quarter was good to me despite not hitting all my goals.  I should be down a lot more weight than I am but I have been very lax on tracking and meal planning.  I still did better than I should have done.

So now, I need to set some new goal for the quarter ending 9/30/10
  • Run the Milk Run  at the MN State Fair with SARGE!!! (She is coming home for a visit in Aug.)
  • Run the Urban Wildland Half Marathon (Signed up today!!!)
  • Survive the month of Birthdays in August
  • Cook (gasp!) 3 nights out of the week
  • Start swimming
  • Stay strong with my training because 9/30/10 is only 3 days before my marathon!
Notice I didn't have any weight goals?  It seems like I never hit the weight goals when I make them and then I get disappointed.   I am going try avoiding the scale this quarter (unless my pants start getting tight).   I think if I focus on training properly I will enjoy my marathon much more.

Tonight is the very last game of T-Ball for this season and for my middle son.  I love watching them but I am happy that the season is over.  It should make it easier to get my mid-week training done.
