April Recap and Jillian Michaels Boost Your Metabolism Review

I can't believe another month in 2010 is done!  April seemed to be good to me as far as getting back on the wagon.

Recap:
  • Hit the 3 mile milestone
  • Ran the Get in Gear 5K
  • Signed up for Twin Cities Marathon
  • Lost a little over six pounds (I am down 9 since March)
  • Started my 3rd round of Pilates
  • Kept a journal of my food intake most days.  I finally found a good online journal that works for me---here.
  • Finally opened up Boost Your Metabolism DVD after having it over a month.
  • Finally have a working Garmin!
Not too shabby of a month if I do say so myself.

On to Jillian Michaels.....

One of my work buddies is a total glutton for punishment as she has a whole library of Jillian workouts that she rotates through her workout schedule.  Based on her recommendation, I chose to try Boost Your Metabolism.  I was a little hesitant because it was twice as long as Shred....and lets be honest anything past 20 minutes with Jillian and I fear for my life.

I popped it in and was able to follow the moves just fine.  The great thing about her workouts is that moves are pretty old school and relatively simple.  Simple moves does not equal easy workout.  This was a tough workout and not even half way through, I was dripping with sweat.  The time went quick and at the end I was TIRED!  As per Garmin....I burned 772 calories just on that workout.  This one is a keeper!

Since I was home with Diva today, we tried to run with the jogger again.  Still wasn't feeling it, so I walked most of the way (3 miles).   Tomorrow is my "long run" and I am hoping to do more than 3 miles....without walk breaks.

Three Things Thursday

1. I am not running today. The wind is whipping out there and I don't want to feel like I am running into a wall.  I am just going to dust off a Jillian DVD and do that instead. I bought the Boost Your Metabolism about a month ago and I haven't worked up the nerve to try it.  My sources say it is harder than Shred.  Maybe I will be back with a review tomorrow or maybe I will be in traction.

2. I had a drink dumped on me at lunch by the waiter. He gave me free french fries as an apology. Hot waffle fries made up for his butterfingers.  I was easy to please today.  Lucky him.  Thankfully I didn't have any meetings this afternoon so I didn't have to show up sporting Pepsi stains(***gag Pepsi***).

3. I have tomorrow off of work! Woot!!! Bring on the weekend! Although, my big plans of taking Diva to the Zoo are slim to none because of the stormy forecast.  If that is the case, I am going to polish my Mother of the Year Crown and make her have date with every Disney movie in the house.  Either way....I am just looking forward to having 3 days off.

Little Miss Workout

According to my new and improved Garmin FR60 heart rate monitor, I have burned a total of 1104 calories today.  My workouts included a brisk 3 mile hilly walk over lunch, an almost 3 mile run with Diva after work, and 60 minutes of Pilates.  I am TIRED...but am enjoying a guiltless beer tonight.

Not quite sure what is going on with my running lately.  I am having concrete leg syndrome and I feel like I am made of lead.  I cannot seem to replicate the awesome 3 miler I did almost 2 weeks ago.  I am not going to worry about it I will just keep pushing and eventually I will break through this wall.  I am not sure if I am having issues because of the time that I am running (usually after work), or if it is that I am dehydrated (I have sucked at getting to my minimum 64oz), or if it is that I am still getting over that barky cough (still have fits of hacking).  Or it could be just a craptastic run without reading into it.

 
Today's run was a lot of fun because I threw Diva in the jogger and took her with me.  I am not a fan of running with the stroller because it infringes on my ME time is heavy and awkward.  She was a great coach because she kept telling me to "run faster".  She provided me with great music....her version of Old McDonald was very entertaining (note to self:  teach her proper animal sounds do not sound like flatulence ).  She was also there to help me clean up my language.  When I had to wait for this lady to take sweet time her time while she blocked the road, Diva reminded me not to use the word "Ass Clown" (note to self:  clean up language).

She also cracked me up because she found an old Timex and she instisted on wearing her "wunning watch".    It warms the heart that she wants to be just like her mama.

I will try the run again tomorrow and hope for a better one.

Get in Gear 5K Race Report

The Stats:

The Story:
We had beautiful weather all week long.  I mean it was perfect running weather.  I kept my eye on the forecast all week and it looked like we were supposed to get some rain for today's race.  What they didn't predict was a torrential downpour.  The rain was coming down in buckets!  It was a great big soaking rain and there were even a few flashes of lighting and rumbles of thunder.  Thankfully the lighting stopped and being a group of tough broads (minus one that was a no show), we didn't let a little rain hold us back.  

My goal for this race was to complete it between 30-35 minutes.  I didn't know how I would do considering I was down for the count this week with some sort of TB like cough.  

I felt pretty good up until mile marker #1 where I had a really bad calf cramp.  Earlier this week at Pilates I did a move wrong and my calf seized up into a crazy knot.  It came as no surprise that it flared up during the race.  I stopped to stretch and started running about 2 minutes later.  At mile marker #2 and at about 2.5 miles, I stopped and took another quick walk break just to catch my breath....the coughing came back.  When I started running again, I could see the finish did what I could to make it to the finish line.  I know I was making the ugly finish line face as I was trying my hardest to keep my legs moving.

I finished.  I was over my goal by 54 seconds.  It was not horrible, but nevertheless I was still slightly disappointed with my time.  The great thing is that this s a baseline race.  I have never ran a chipped 5K before and I have never kept track.  Woo Hoo, a fresh Start!  The crew all finished within minutes of each other except for Leah who may have to start with the Kenyans next year. Ha!

After the race, we headed back to my place for brunch and mimosas.  It was a perfect way to end the morning.  After everyone left, I slipped into a 3 hour coma.  I was TIRED.  I don't think I was this tired after my full marathon....I have a LONG road ahead of me.

Final Thoughts:
 I am so excited because all of us that ran today had completed a major goal.  This race meant different things to all of us.  For some of the crew, this was their first 5K ever.  For others, it was a fun activity to support their new change in lifestyle (3 of these women have dropped some serious lbs!), For me it was a great way to celebrate my return to running.  It was a lot of fun and I have a feeling we will all be doing this again.
 
Although I was a bit disappointed in my time, my friend called and gave me a reality check.  She saw my updated post on Facebook that I completed a 5K and she said "A couple of weeks ago you told me the longest distance you ran was about 1.5 miles." (Completely true)  She then went on to say "That is a pretty fast couch to 5K transition."  Ahhhh....perspective.  I did really well considering I have only been back to running a couple of weeks.

In The Chest.....Let it Rest

Boooooo!  I was really hoping that this heaviness in my chest would just quietly go away.  No such luck.  I sound like I am a 5 pack a day smoker and when I cough or laugh it sounds like I am a barking seal.

What did that mean for my run?  Nothing, it didn't happen.  I decided to live by the old rule...In the Chest, Let it Rest.  I skipped it.  Since I feel like complete dung, I am choose rest instead.  I do not want to push it because I want to be healthy for the Get in Gear 5K on Saturday.

All was not lost though, I did do a 3 mile walk on my lunch hour. 


Other tidbits....
After yesterday's visit to the Chiropractor I am pretty sore to the touch,however, my leg seems to be a lot less locked up.  No bruises (yet) and I have been icing the area.  I hope this helps.  Thankfully it is not a huge problem that has benched me and I hope it keeps me on my feet.

My 3 Things Challenge is going really well. 
1.  No Candy.---none, nada, nunca!
2.  Drink more water----At least 64oz/day
3.  Less time surfing at night----Doing well on that avenue too.  I guess it might be cheating since I have been in bed early all week.

My first 5K of the season is on Saturday.  I am looking forward to it.  We have  a pretty big group of women from my office doing the race so it should be quite fun.  The only thing missing is Sarge.  She will be there in spirit.  I miss her like crazy and I can't wait until she returns.

Taht is all I got tonight....Now, I have a date with Nyquil.

Graston Technique

If you ever want to know what torture feels like, have the Graston Technique done to you. 

As I have mentioned, I am seeing a Chiropractor for some hip and knee issues.  Today's visit brought on a whole new kind of pain.  The doctor slathered on some goop and whipped out a stainless steel blade (as pictured) and ran it up and down my IT Band.  That thing hit EVERY. SINGLE. KNOT. 

Before she started, she looked at me with sympathetic eyes and said "This IS going to hurt".  I just nodded my head in agreement because I have had this done once before for a shin split issue several years ago.  All I can say is my shins must have a much higher pain tolerance because this was HELL!!!  I would have remembered that kind of pain.

I clutched the table and bit the insides of my cheeks as she broke up some bad adhesions.  I had to be careful with my language because my 7 year old was in the room (same day appointments).  But I can tell you I think I made up a whole new list of cuss words that would make your mama cry.  The doc said, "Hey, I think we found the root of all of your problems" as she sawed away.  She also said, "This CAN'T be worse than childbirth".  UMMMMMM..... in my world childbirth = morphine.  She finally stopped when she realized I had blacked out.  When I came to and heard my son say, "hit her again!".  Ugh.

She gave me my marching orders by telling me that  I will probably be BRUISED from this experience and that I should ice and stretch tonight.  She then said, "See you next Monday, we'll do this again."  Great!  I CAN'T WAIT!!!



(On a side note....it really did clear up my shin splints so I am have hope for this too)

Weekend Wrap-Up in Bullets

Saturday-
  • Baseball season has officially begun.  My oldest son had his first practice and this marks the point on the calendar when things start to get INSANE!
  • 3.21 mile run done in 33:47.  It is not fast by any means, but kind of speedy for me. 
  • After the run, the family and I headed out to Como Zoo to see the animals.  My kids could have cared less about the animals, all they wanted was the food that they were selling.  Ha!
  • My niece and her fiance met us at the park and I got to play with my camera.  I made them model for me.  On a side note....  I am FLOORED that she is old enough to get married.  In fact she is older than I was when I got married.  BUT...I met her when she was only 10 years old!!! It is crazy how fast time flies.  Aren't they cute????
Sunday-
  • I enjoyed a quick early morning coffee date with BFF
  • Got all my meal planning and grocery shopping done by 9:00AM. It is a new world record!
  • Biked as a family to the park. I can't imagine how people can ride more than a few miles.  My ass hurts and we didn't travel that far!!
  • I wasn't going to run today but decided to do just one lap around Lake Nokomis.  I brought my oldest child along to bike while I ran.  Although the run wasn't anything spectacular, I enjoyed my time with him and he enjoyed tell me to speed it up!
  • My allergies are starting to flare up and I am feeling a bit heavy in the chest.  I am trying to make sure it doesn't become Bronchitis.  Plan of attack:  Neti Pot, drugs, lots of water, and rest.

I am BEAT!

A Great Start to the Week

My son and I had a chiropractor appointment this morning.  When it was my turn to get adjusted, my son was chit chatting with the doctor and the interns.


Son:  Do you know what my mom can do?
Dr:  No, what can your mom do?
Son:  My mom runs MARATHONS!!!!
ME:  (giggling because I can barely run for 3 miles)
Dr:  WOW....do you know how far that is?
Son:  YEAH, like 100 miles....and she gets all kinds of medals.
Dr:  That is amazing!  Are you going to run a race with her someday?
Son:  I would like to, but she is WAY too fast!!!
Me:  (Audible snort) BWAH!!!!!!

Things like that totally make my day.  It is nice to know that I am kind of cool even though I am the "meanest mom ever". I am never the cool parent so I am enjoying my moment.


I really think these adjustments are starting to help.  After my adjustments, I am always sore.  They have been working out my hip flexor muscles with The Stick.  OUCH.  OUCH.  OUCH!  It always hurts but it releases it and feels better. Hopefully keeping up with these treatments will keep me going all Summer.

On a completely different note....

I finally got the final piece of the replacement Garmin FR60.  In this post, I received the device and the heart rate monitor but none of the other components. Ughhh....after several emails back and forth to the company, they finally sent the footpod and the ANT stick.  Trust me, this is the most polite and condensed version of this drama.  I truly appreciate that the agreed to make the exchange and ultimately I am happy....but it was a long road.  I took it on a test run tonight and IT WORKED!!!!!! I probably just jinxed myself but I am over the moon that I have something that actually works as package indicates.  Now I will spare you any more Garmin talk (this is what happens when my OCD takes over).

Weekend Wrap-Up, A New Milestone and New Shoes

I hit 3 miles today!!!  Finally.  Three miles is my milestone where I feel like I am well on my way back on the road of running.  I was beginning to worry about hitting it because my Get in Gear 5K is in less than two weeks and I had been struggling to get up to 2 miles.

I set out both Saturday and Sunday to do my usual neighborhood loop and about 1.5 miles into my run, I had to walk.  My feet felt like they were blocks of concrete and my calves tightened up so bad.  I had to keep stopping to stretch and eventually just gave up and walked home.  Of course I had to blame the shoes I was wearing and it became my mission to get new running sneaks today.

I have a theory about my current running shoes, I think they are TOO SUPPORTIVE.  I have been fitted with a stability shoe for both my weight (I was told they were better for heavier runners...GAH!) and because of my over-pronation.  As I was looking at my collection of running shoes, I realized that the 3 pairs of stability shoes I own were worn during some of my worst injuries (knee, PF, and IT band issues).  My idea was get a shoe that was not as built up in the arch because I feel that the extra support causes more stress on my feet and legs.  My theory might be complete bull shit but I wanted to try something new this time around.

I paid a visit to my regular running shoe store in Minneapolis, Marathon Sports (awesome, awesome place).  I explained my idea to the guy helping me and since he didn't look at me like I had completely lost my mind, I decided on this shoe:
It is only slightly less supportive than the Saucony Stabil that I normally wear, but I think it will give let my foot do a bit more natural movement. It looks almost excactly the same however, the soles and the arches are not as "blocky".   I gave the shoes a test run tonight and I was able to run my 3 miles (albeit at a snail's pace) with no problems. Maybe I was right....we will see.  Wish me luck!

The Demise of the Detox

Detox?

Rigghhhhht!

My crazy idea to only eat fruit and veggies lasted all of 15 hours. I had been fighting a headache all morning.  After our lunch time walk, I felt dizzy and light headed.  I needed protein.  STAT.  I had nothing at my desk to eat and I didn't have any change in my wallet.  I hit my friend for a buck and visited the vending machine for a package of peanuts.  I inhaled them in the elevator.  About 15 minutes later, I started to feel better. 

After that all I could think about was food.  I wanted real food and I wanted it quick.  As I was leaving work, I even considered getting a pizza for the ride home.  Thankfully I didn't and somehow I managed to not eat everything in sight when I got home.  I decided that this detox business is not for me.  I am better off starting off with baby steps like cutting out the candy (proud to say that there was NO candy in my diet yesterday).  I also got rid of my double secret stash of Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs.  Chubby Hubby was appalled and I am not sure if it was because of the hidden arsenal or if it was because I didn't share.   Either way, they are gone.

What did I learn from this fail?  This was a stupid idea and I would never make it as a Vegan.

Soooo, now the plan is:
  • Up the veggies.
  • Up the water.
  • Up the exercise.
  • Quit candy.

    Three Things Thursday

    1.  I am so relieved that tomorrow is Friday.  It has been a helluva week here at the office.  You know that stimulus money floating around?  Well, 1/2 of my job is to provide quarterly reporting on how that money is being spent.  We have a 10 day deadline so the pressure is on.  Please do me a favor and check out how your tax dollars are being used.  I want to make sure that the life I am losing caused by the stress of getting this information will not be in vain.  In the name of transparency....check out recovery.gov.

    2.  The kids are at Grandma and Grandpa's house tonight and you know what that means......time to dump the candy.  It is much easier to do it when they are not around.  After being assaulted by a chocolate bunny (and Reese's eggs and Peeps, and Whopper eggs, and jelly beans) last night, it is clear that I cannot have that garbage in the house.  I eat candy even if it is the nastiest kind (which is what the Easter Bunny brought).



    3.  For the next 3 days, I am consuming nothing but veggies, fruit, and water.  It is my own version of a detox.  I have planned out my menu and it is something I can stick with.  Monday, I am going to add back the protein and whole grains.  For three days, I can handle this....(I think).  I honestly think this is the only way I am going to get back on track.

    What Happens When My Imagination Takes Over...

    I have been going to the Chiropractor for a clicking knee and hip.  I have some mild IT band, knee, hip issues that I am being proactive about treating before they sideline me completely.  My clinic I go to is the local chiropractic university and I have both doctors and interns treating me at the same time.  The doctor does all the adjustments, while the interns do a lot of the muscle work.  I have been seeing some great results from my treatments.  I love this place and the all of the providers are AWESOME.

    This time, for whatever reason, my imagination got the best of me.  I got into a conversation with one of the interns during my appointment.  After our friendly small talk about the weather and what we did for Easter, the topic turned to running.  As it turns out, she is an avid runner and has the body to match the title.  I on the other hand, have almost 25 years of running under my belt except I do not have a runner's body, I have a body of a competitive Little Debbie eater.  For whatever reason, I started getting depressed.  My mind wandered and I would imagine what was REALLY going through her head.

    When she was telling me about a new race in town, I kind of tuned and I was trying to read her true thoughts.... I bet she thinks that I am lying about being a runner.  I bet she is laughing at me. I bet she is giggling about the fatty runner with all of the other doctors.  She is just humoring me to talk about running. Then I jump back into the conversation and say "That sounds like a cool race, you will have to give me a report and maybe next year I will consider doing that one."  OMG, was that an eyeroll???!!!

    The conversation continued......

    Me: You ran Grandma's marathon in 2006....so did I?  Wasn't the heat a killer?
    Imagination answer from intern:  Yeah, fatso I run it every year and you look like you sweat eating Twinkies.  I doubt that you have ever run around the block.
    Real answer:  Yes, it was a killer day.  My time sucked and I got really sick.

    Intern:  Your quads are really in knots and your hip flexors are a mess.  Have you been stretching?
    Imagination question from intern: Hey fatty, did you ever think that if you lost a few lbs you wouldn't have to waste my time patching up your chubby ass.
    Me:  Yes, I do now. My years of never stretching has finally caught up to me.
    Imaginations version of response: You bet your ass it has, you are too fat to run.  Lard ass.
    Real Answer:  Let me show you a couple of new stretches that will get your hip flexors to release.  I do these all the time.


    Truthfully, I am not sure what sparked this, perhaps chocolate poisoning from Easter?  Perhaps PMS? Whatever the reason....I was not myself.  Like I said my imagination was working overtime and I am a bit more sane today.  Those negative thoughts paid me back in a craptastic run last night.  I guess I could say I learned my lesson.

    Moral of the story:  Do not let thoughts that other people may or MAY NOT be having ruin your day.

    Weekend Wrap-Up-Easter Style

    Happy Belated Easter!

    I am typing with post holiday bloated fingers.  Isn't it amazing what a little salt can do?  I am going to have to drink a couple of gallons of water to take care of this. 

    We had a great Easter.  Our family traveled North to spend the weekend with my parents.  This was one of the years that American Easter and Orthodox Easter fell on the same day.  (Yes, we do celebrate Easter twice and the bunny does come to our house both times, jealous?)  Adding to the Easter festivities was my dad's birthday.  It ended up being a weekend of eating.  It is so funny how everything tastes better at my parents house.


    Now that I am full of Reese's eggs, Ham, Sarma,  and many many other great things.....I must get back on track.  I am suffering from a food hangover and I dread having to wear pants that button to work today.  Do I dare step on the scale?

    Let the detox begin!

    Three Things Thursday

    It is 1:51AM and I can't think of anything else I would rather be doing.  Who needs sleep?

    GARMIN
    I am going to come across as an ungrateful bitch.  Sobeit.  I took advantage of Gamin's offer to exchange my device.  Last week I shipped that thing back and I was excited to see a package waiting for me when I got home yesterday.  The excitement was squashed when I opened the package because I was expecting an equal exchange as per the offer.  Well, it was nowhere near equal.

    What I sent them:
    • 1 Garmin Watch/Receiver
    • 1 Heart Rate Monitor
    • 1 ANT+ Stick (for wireless data uploading)
    • 1 Footpod (tracks distance and pace)

    What I received:
    • 1 Garmin Sports Watch
    • 1 Heart Rate Monitor (That doesn't show calories burned unless you use it with the footpod)

    The item I received, I really have no use for.  I could have kept my original Forerunner 50 for a sports watch and saved myself the shipping fee when packaged it up and sent it back.  I emailed the company.  Again.  Truthfully, after two years of trying to resolve this, I am ready to chalk it up as wasted money.  I am sure they will be more than happy to correct this, but really, enough already.  I am sick of dealing with it as much as you are probably sick of reading about it.  I am tired of the back and forth just to try to get an overpriced watch to track a little data.  As I said before, Garmin's customer service is AWESOME, but friendly help only goes so far.  At the end of the day, I still have a product I cannot use. 

    Can you tell I am frustrated?

    April Already?
    I can't the first quarter of 2010 is over!  That went by really really quick.  I reviewed my goals for the year and realized that my plan has shifted for most of my goals.  I quit the gym and I quit Weight Watchers.  Both topped the list of my goals.  

    Here are my new goals for the next quarter:
    • Run the Get in Gear 5K
    • Continue base building for Twin Cities Marathon
    • Lose 10lbs (I hope more, but need to break it up into smaller goals)
    • Finally try a Kettlebell workout
    • Continue lunch time walks at least 3 times per week.
    Boo....it is April 1st and I can't think of a good April Fools Joke.  My son got me yesterday though....He asked if I wanted a brownie.  I said yes.  He gave me a brown letter E.  That one was a knee slapper.  ha!  Maybe I will try that one at the office.  Last year, me shouting FIRE didn't go over very well. (kidding)

    Research Study
    I posted awhile back about a research study I am involved in.  It is a work/family balance study.  My requirement is to wear a pedometer for a week to track all the steps I take in a day.  I record them and then I participate in an interview.  I do this on a quarterly basis.  I just finished my 7 days of wearing the pedometer and I discovered most of my days I walked 10-15K steps.  This is not the norm, I have been more active this last week than I have been all winter.   I may continue to wear the pedometer on a regular basis just to see if I can get close to 15K everyday.

    Now it is 2:35AM, and I am finally getting tired.  Sorry if there are spelling and grammar errors (more than the usual), I didn't proofread.  I am going to drag my butt back to bed.
