Weekend Wrap-up-An Awesome Long Run

One problem that I am having being a repeat offender marathoner is that the long runs feel so daunting. I have memories tied to certain running routes and while I haven't had horrible experiences, the thought of running someplace that takes 25 minutes by car makes me cringe knowing I have to cover the miles by foot.  I usually end up procrastinating and putting off the long run for as long as I can.  I hit the pavement when Chubby Hubby starts making snide comments about me  putting the rest of the weekend on hold.  It is funny how my perspective changes on the day of the marathon because my thoughts shift to being only 26.2 miles away from a cold beer.

This weekend brought more of the long run fretting. My goal was to run 8 on Saturday (I am making up my own schedule).  I did a 3 mile run/walk on Friday and I feared that my long run would be just as awful....lets just say there was a lot more walking than running.  I decided to change things up a bit and do an 8 mile by breaking it up into two 4 mile loops. I ran basically a huge figure eight around my neighborhood. The mid-point of my run was my house where I stopped and grabbed some water.  I have to say it was kind of a slick way of doing things.

Minneapolis has TONS of cool running routes but as I mentioned when you do them all the time, the distance can feel daunting.  Exploring my own neighborhood was more fun than I thought.  I live in a cool area because there is a lot of nature reserves and we are smack dab in the middle of the city about a mile from MSP airport.....a good mix of wildlife and city.  With this diverse scenery, I got to see a mother duck with her ducklings waddling next to me on a wooded trail (they were moving faster than me) and then I saw some dude dancing in droopy drawers on his front porch singing at the top of his lungs while I was waiting for an endless stop light to let me cross a busy intersection.

My eight mile run ended up being  AWESOME.  My changed up route paired with an amazing spring morning and a kick ass play list on my ipod made this a perfect run!  I am by no means a fast runner and I covered this distance at 11:47 average pace (really fast for me)!  Also, I did not stop to walk (unheard of).  I needed this long run to go well because I needed the confidence booster.  When I got home, my marathon confirmation card came in the mail.  Normally I start dry heaving when I see it, but this time I am EXCITED! 

The run set the tone for a great weekend.  We officially kicked off deck season with our friends, watched the kids play baseball and hockey, and I hit up hot yoga on Sunday evening.

Random Thoughts

The temps are in the 60's and the sun is out! It is something to be extremely happy about because we haven't had the temps in the 60's for a very very very long time.

You know how some runs are just awesome and feel like you could go forever? Yeah, last night's run was not it. Spring allergies were in full force and my legs felt like they were on backwards. With the help of some (a lot) of walk breaks, I covered 3ish miles. Some runs just suck and this was one of them.

I am going for a short run tonight because it would be a crying shame not to get out and enjoy this spectacular day! 

I am contemplating running a half marathon next weekend as my "long run". I am not quite at a half marathon distance but it would be nice to have something organized to get miles my miles in and to have water along the route. I am going to see how my long run goes the weekend before I make that decision.

Aside from my long run and one hockey game, I have a free weekend! I think I will finally get some spring cleaning done, work on some homework, and hit up some hot yoga. I know you are jealous of the extreme life of glamour I live.

I only have 3 more weeks of school left! If I can do decent on my final exam and successfully complete my website project, I will walk away with an A. I am holding strong with an A average now. I got an A in my other class and that would mean a 4.0 GPA for this semester! Woo Hoo!

Three Things Thursday

I have another challenge besides conquering 26.2 miles.....I am going to have to conquer the kitchen.  If you know me....this is no easy challenge.

On Sunday, the 14th I had a pain in my left side that came on so hard and so sudden.  It didn't let up.  Then came the fever.   I could not get out of bed all day on Monday.  Tuesday brought on more of the same.  Since it is very unusual that I call into work two days in a row, I decided to go to the doctor (in case my boss had a question why I was out).  I felt silly for even thinking about going. 
I am glad I did!
Blood test showed that I was fighting an bad infection.  Later that afternoon, I ended up with a CT scan.  It was not how I expected my afternoon to go.  About an hour later, I was speaking to my doctor about my diagnosis of Diverticulitis.  Great.  A real shitty condition....pun intended.  She handed me two antibiotics and a list of things I should avoid list of  no food just got a lot longer. 

I have no choice now but to make cooking, meal planning, and shopping a fun hobby.  There is only one problem....I HATE it all.  I am the queen of assembling meals and eating on the run.  I don't eat terrible but I don't eat enough of the right stuff.  With my food allergies, ulcer, and now diverticulitis (somehow I think they are all related), I am going to have to get creative.  My pity party is over and I am determined to make it fun.  I am adding my creations in the kitchen to this blog....if nothing else it will be humorous.  So if anyone has recipes that do not contain gluten, dairy, fruit, nuts, seeds, poultry, or shellfish....please send it my way.  Doesn't leave much now does it?

Bod Pod:

I had my post fitness assessment for my strength training class.  The results:
  • Down 4% body fat
  • Down 13lbs (a little of that weight loss # was padded by being on a liquid diet)
  • Doubled my push ups
  • Doubled my sit ups
  • Max leg press 350lbs
  • Sit and reach doubled.
 Not too shabby if I do say so myself.  I am completely sold on weight training.  Part of my assessment was to get into the Bod Pod.  It is a machine that accurately measures your body mass.  It is pretty cool with the exception of having to wear spandex in front of the buff college students running the assessment. 

I think the designers of this thing were inspired by Mork and Mindy (did I just age myself?) 

Training Update:

Two months until marathon time!  My shorter runs are going really well still despite my week of running off.  Long runs....well, I guess I had better start doing them.  I have been a fair weathered runner when it comes to getting out there to do the long runs......running in a snow storm is not my bag and neither is running on a treadmill.  I have a plan in place and as long as I can get up to 18 miles, I will be just fine.  My only goal for Grandma's Marathon is to have fun and to have it be a warm up for Twin Cities Marathon.  I don't have a time goal, I just want to have fun with this one.

Boston on my Mind

It has taken me a few days to process what happened at the Boston Marathon and frankly I am numb.  This horrific event hit me personally even though toeing the starting line of the Boston Marathon is an extremely far fetched dream.  This is my sport, these are my people.  My heart is broken for the people that lost loved ones and for those that were seriously injured.  It makes me so angry that so many people have to adapt to a new "normal" for something so senseless.  Boston and all those affected are in my thoughts and prayers. 

There is nothing more I can say except I hope the person(s) responsible for this violence rot in hell.  This poster says it the best...

(well most people run faster.....I might still be a little slower than most)

Thunder Snow

It is April 11th and we are in the middle of a snow storm.  Not just any snow storm, but one that is accompanied by thunder and lightning.  Interesting.  I can honestly say that this might be a weather first for me.  I know you are all jealous of where I live!  To all my wonderful Facebook friends that are posting photos of sunny weather and kids swimming, I would like you to know that I am flipping you off as I sit here "liking" your photos.  Don't worry, soon enough I will be complaining about how hot and humid it is.

What I cannot complain about right now is my running.  I have been getting out there and pounding the pavement.  Slowly but surely, I am starting to feel like a runner.  I have not felt this good in YEARS.  I sure hope I don't jinx myself but running is FUN again!  I don't think I will be caught up on my training plan for Grandma's Marathon but I think if I can keep up what I am doing and get to 16-18 miles as my longest run that I will be fine.  My goal for Grandma's is to finish and have fun.  My goal for Twin Cities is a lofty PR of 4:30 or at least that is what I am going to shoot for.

A short, sweet post about nothing today.  I will get back into the blogging routine.  I sure miss it.

What the Hell is a Flesh Light?

That is a question you should never ask and NEVER, EVER Google!!!  Consider that my good deed of the day giving you all fair warning.

Why am I writing about a Fleshlight?  I have been getting so many of those awesome "anonymous" comments about them so I had to see what the heck they were talking about.  I searched for the keyword, clicked into one of the sites, gasped and quickly shut it down.  Things that make you go hmmmm.  People really use them?  These type of comments are annoying but of course I now find them kind of humorous.  Here are two of my favorites from my last post:

  Wow.  Just wow.  How do these comments get generated?  I am still shaking my head.  Oh...again, do NOT Google Fleshlight.  *shudder*  This will teach me to ignore my blog for so long. 
So while the hackers have taken over my blog, I have been busy.  Here are the cliff notes:


It is going awesome.  I love being a student. I am currently building a website for my final project.  I think it is going to ROCK.  I also got an A in my other class.  Woo Hoo!  I have never in my life had a 4.0 and I am determined to keep it that way.

Weight Training:

My 8 week weight training class is coming to an end.  I love it and I really think it has been making a difference with my running.  I would like to keep up a strength program but I am not sure I can do it on my own by just going to the gym.  What do you do for strength?  Crossfit?  DVDs (Shred, P90X, etc)?  Gym?  Personal Trainer?



I am really behind in my training but my weekday runs are getting a lot better.  Truth be told, it has been about 4 years since I have felt this good running.  I of course am knocking on wood saying that, but I really feel awesome.  My long runs aren't were they need to be but I know I will be able to pull off a decent (for me) finish at Grandma's.  Twin Cities Marathon is the one I am working on getting a 4:30 finish.

Twin Cities Marathon:

Oh yeah....I signed up for that race!  My friend Kelli from Arizona  is coming to Minnesota for both Grandma's and Twin Cities and we will be doing them together (together meaning we will drive to the race, snap a before and after shot, and drive home....she is a bit quicker than I am).  I am working hard to achieve a PR for this race.

A Note from my Play List

I am one of those people that does not understand lyrics to songs very well.  One day in the car, the song "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men came on the radio and I asked Chubby Hubby how they could get away with playing that song on the radio.  He looked at me like I was nuts.  The conversation went down like this:

Chubby Hubby: What do you think they are saying?
Me:  Clearly, they are saying this shit will kill ya.
Chubby Hubby:   You are an idiot, don't you mean this ship will carry us.

That was my random play list thought because it just came on the radio.  Every since that conversation I laugh every time I hear that song.  What songs have you gotten all wrong?

This is a very dumbed down and boring blog post.  I miss my little corner of the interweb.  I will write more than once this month!!
